“Profaneness has gone out into all the land” (Jeremiah 23:15)

  • To SANCTIFY = to set something apart as belonging to God.
  • What is sanctified is then HOLY
  • What is not holy is common
  • Profane = “Outside the temple”
  • The two are not to be mixed.

  • Offered fire “which He had not commanded them” (“profane fire” - NKJ)
  • They died before the Lord
  • “It shall be a statute forever through your generations, that you may distinguish between holy and unholy”

“…make a distinction between the holy and the profane” (NASV)

two ways one may be guilty
Two ways one may be guilty:

1. Treating unholy things as though they were holy.

2. Treating holy things as if they were common.

Profanity is possible in “worship”.

  • Defiled by human authority
  • Defiled by bringing in secular
  • “Take these things away! Do not make My Father’s house a house of merchandise.” John 2:16

  • Fire in itself is not sinful.
  • This was fire “which He had not commanded them” (vs. 1) = profane
  • “By those who come near Me, I must be regarded as holy” (verse 3).
  • Anything brought into worship “which He has not commanded” is profanity.
