  2. Diabetesisaverycommonconditionseenin lakhsofpeopleofvariousagesaroundthe world. It’saconditionwherethebodyis impairedtoproduceinsulinleadingtoaspike inbloodsugarlevels. Diabetesisgenerally classifiedintotwocategories – type1diabetes wherethepancreasproduceslittleorno insulin, type2diabeteswherethebodycan’t respondnormallytotheinsulinproducedor resiststheinsulin. Diabetes / diabetesmellituseventually increasestheriskofvariousotherproblems thatincludescardiovasculardiseases, kidney problems, stroke, neurologicalproblems, eye- relateddisordersandmore. Onesuchcomplicationofdiabetesthat affectstheeyesis ‘Diabeticretinopathy’ (DR).

  3. WHAT IS DIABETIC RETINOPATHY? Retinaisamembranethatcoversthebackof theeyeandishighlysensitivetolight. Any lightthathitstheeyeisconvertedtosignals andsenttothebrainforfurther interpretation. Diabeticretinopathy (DR) isonesuchrare conditionthataffectsthebloodvesselsinthe retinaoftheeyeresultinginvisionlossand blindness. Asobserved, withage, diabetesisaffecting morenumberofpeople, andhencetherisk factoraffectingyoureyesincreases. Itthus becomesimportanttogetthedilatedeyetest doneregularly andpreventtheextremes.

  4. SYMPTOMS Unfortunately, Diabeticretinopathymaynot showanysymptomsinthebeginning. With progressincondition, observeforthe followingsymptomsandtakeimmediate actionstosaveyourvision: Blurredvision Impairedcolourvision Darkoremptyareasinyourvision Suddenortotallossofvision Fluctuationsinvision Spots/darkstringsappearfloating Poornightvision

TYPES OF DIABETIC RETINOPATHY Diabeticretinopathycanbeclassifiedintotwo typesbasedonitsseverity: Earlydiabeticretinopathy Diabeticretinopathycanbeclassifiedintotwo typesbasedonitsseverity: Thisisacommonformofdiabetic retinopathywherethebloodvesselsinthe retinabecomeweak. Thisisalsoknownas ‘nonproliferativediabeticretinopathy‘ (NPDR). Thereisnoproliferationofnewblood vesselsinthiscase. Verysmallbulgesprotrudefromthewalls ofthesmallervesselsofretina. Thesetiny bulgesmightleadtoleakingfluidand bloodintotheretina. Onemoreimportantfactorofthis conditionisthatthenervefibersinthe retinamaybegintoswellwhichrequires immediatemedicalhelp.

  6. Advanceddiabetic retinopathy Anadvancedconditionalsocalled ‘proliferativediabeticretinopathy’ (PDR). Here, thereisformationofnew, abnormal bloodvesselsduetotheclosureofthe damagedbloodvesselsintheretinathat canleakintotheclear, jelly-likesubstance thatfillsthecenteroftheeye. Thiscomplicationeventuallydamagesthe opticnervethatcarriestheimagefromthe eyetothebrainfurthercausingglaucoma.

  7. PreventionofDiabetic Retinopathy: Themainreasonfordiabeticretinopathy beingthepoorcontrolofdiabetes, itis highlyrecommendedtokeepyour diabetesunderchecktoavoidsuch complications. Knowyourbloodpressurelevelsand cholesterollevelstokeepfurther complicationslikediabeticretinopathyat bay. Avoidexcessiveusageoftobacco Keepyourweightundercontrolby exercisingregularly. Maintainahealthylifestylebyeatinga balanceddiet, avoidingexcessivesugar, saltintake. Donotoverlyconsumealcoholandrestrict yourdrinks (bothmenandwomen) Observechangesinyourvisionand contactyourdoctorimmediatelywhen yourvisionbecomesblurry.

  8. Regulareyeexercisesandeye examinationsareagoodpreventive measurethatcanhelpavoidthevision loss. COMPLICATIONS DRwhennottreatedattherighttimemay leadtothefollowingcomplications: Vitreoushemorrhage Theabnormalbloodvesselwhichisnewly formedleaksintothevitreousgelintheeye, blockinglightfromreachingtheretina. Ifthe retinaremainsundamaged, thenthis conditionwillberesolvednaturally. Detachedretina Thisisacomplicationthatmayariseifthe scartissuepullsawaytheretinafromtheback oftheeye. Thisresultsinlossofvisionifleft untreated.

  9. Glaucoma Disturbanceintheflowoffluidtotheeyedue totheformationofnewbloodvessels, resultinginpressureintheeye. Thisincreases theriskofopticnervedamage. TREATMENT OF DIABETIC RETINOPATHY Followingarethemostcommonlypracticed methodstotreatdiabeticretinopathy: Lasertreatment Focallasertreatment, Scatterlasertreatment arecarriedoutdependingontheseverityof theDR (DiabeticRetinopathy). Here, thenew bloodvesselsintheretinaaretreatedand somecasesofmaculopathyarestabilized. Eyeinjections Eyeinjectionsareusedtotreatsevere maculopathyandpreventnewbloodvessels formingatthebackoftheeyes.

  10. Eyesurgery Eyesurgeryorvitrectomyisconductediflaser treatmentisnotpossible. Itisconductedto removetheexcessivebloodorscartissuefrom theeye.
