  8. Centers of Excellence Program Purpose:Support research on any disease (or diseases) that disproportionately impacts health disparity populations, with the aim of improving minority health or eliminating health disparities

  9. CENTERS OF EXCELLENCE FUNDING MECHANISMS Exploratory Grant Awards (P20): are targeted to institutions that have research programs but need additional funding to develop a health disparity research program. Funds will strengthen the infrastructure for minority health and other health disparities research and training. It will provide resources to develop innovative partnership models. P60 Comprehensive Center Awards (P60):are targeted to research-intensive institutions pursuing research in health disparities. Funds will be used to establish a health disparities research center.

  14. The goal of the program is to provide endowment grants to eligible institutions to build minority health and other health disparities research and training capacity. The intent of the program is to build endowments through which there is steady support for health disparities research and training. NCMHD Research Endowment

  15. Establish endowed chairs and professorships. Provide research funds for faculty, staff and students. Develop new courses in health disparities and cultural competency. Provide fellowships for residency and doctoral students and support of their research. Provide scholarships and research opportunities for students. Leverage the endowment to secure additional funding for health disparities activities. NCMHD Research Endowment Activities

  16. Research Infrastructure in Minority Institutions Program (RIMI) • The goal of this program is to provide support for institutions that enroll a significant number of students from minority health disparity populations to develop and enhance their capacity and competitiveness to conduct biomedical or behavioral research. • The program assists non-doctoral degree institutions in the development of their research infrastructure, primarily through collaborations with research-intensive universities.

  17. Loan Repayment Program Health Disparities Research (HDR-LRP) Encourages health professionals to engage in basic, clinical or behavioral research directly relevant to health disparities issues. The HDR program serves as an avenue for NIH to engage and promote the development of research programs that reflect the variety of issues associated with disparities in health status. Extramural Clinical Research (ECR-LRP) Encourages health professionals from disadvantaged backgrounds to conduct clinical research. The emphasis on “clinical research”and on individuals from “disadvantaged backgrounds” highlights the need for the involvement of a cadre of physician scientists in clinical research to strengthen the twenty-first century biomedical and behavioral workforce.

  18. Minority Health and Health Disparities International Research Training Program (MHIRT) Purpose:Support the ability of U.S. academic institutions to offer short-term international training opportunities in health disparities research for undergraduate and graduate students in the health professions who are from health disparity populations and/or are underrepresented in basic science, biomedical, clinical, or behavioral health research career fields.
