Only Smokers are at risk Lung Cancer can be inherited by second hand smoke and most cases of lung cancer in ex smokers • If you already smoke there is no point in quitting the damage is already done When smokers quit the lung can start to repair its self and future damage is prevented • The first sign of lung cancer is always coughing up blood Yes this is a sign but is a later sign of lung cancer • If you are diagnosed with lung cancer the situation is hopeless • This is not true at all!! Lung cancer is treatable

What is Lung Cancer • Lung Cancer is defined as cancer in the lungs caused by the presence of Malignant Tumors • Non Small Cell Lung Cancer is the most common type of lung cancer it spreads more slowly than small cell cancer and has 3 different forms • The first form of lung cancer is defined as Adenocarcinomas and is almost always found in the outer area of the lung • The second form of lung cancer is known as Squamous Cell Carcinomas and is usually found in the center of the lung near the air tube • The final form of lung cancer is known as Large Cell Carcinomas and can occur in any part of the lung. This form tends to grow the fastest out of the 3 forms

Lung Cancer is caused by many different such as • Air pollution • Asbestos • Spreading of Cancer in another part of the body • Radon Gas • Second hand smoke( being exposed to someone who smokes consistently) • about 9/10of lung cancer cases are caused by smoking • Lung Cancer can also be caused by smoking pipes and cigars although they have a lower case of lung cancer than cigarette smokers do • Smoking marijuana also has a great risk of developing lung cancer • Risk also increases with people over the age of 60

History of Lung Cancer • Before the 19th century there was only 100 reported cases of lung cancer • this was so because cigars were only smoked by the rich and cigarettes by the very poor • smoking became popular after World War One and still continues on today • Lung Cancer then went from being a very small ,non existing disease to the number one killer of Americans in the 1970’s

  12. The Symptoms of Lung Cancer

Symptoms of Lung Cancer • The symptoms of Lung Cancer vary from person • they include: • A chronic cough • breathlessness • Weight loss • Excessive fatigue • Pain in the chest as well as other parts of the body; this could mean that the cancer can be spreading to other parts of the body • one of the most important symptoms of lung cancer is coughing up blood • it is recommended that anyone who is coughing up blood see a doctor immediately

  14. How to diagnose Lung Cancer

There are many ways to diagnose lung cancer: • Imaging tests are used: these tests include CT scans, MRI scans, and PET(Positron Emission Tomography) • scans they are used to see the lung cancer has spread from other parts of the body • Sputum Exam: these exams include observing phlegm or spit to see if they contain traces of lung cancer cells • A Bronchoscope: a thin and flexible tube is inserted into the bronchi and exams the lung. From here the doctor can determine whether or not a piece of lung tissue will be taken for further examination

Treatment • there are various treatments for lung cancer: • Surgery: this includes all or part of the lung being removed • Radiation Therapy: this uses powerful X-rays or other radiation to kill cancer cells • Chemotherapy: uses drugs to kill cancer cells and stop new cells from forming • Laser Therapy: a small beam of light burns and kills the cancer • Photodynamic therapy: uses a light to activate a drug in the body to start to kill cancer cells • watchful waiting: this is used in most cases until most symptoms change • Treatment also varies on what stage the cancer is in

Future Research/Outlook • The University of South Florida as well as Georgetown University have come up with many procedures to treat lung cancer and have perfected some of them • many new treatments have lowered the death rate of lung cancer from 100 percent to at least half • They are trying and making attempts to cure Non small cell lung cancer • They have also come up with many ways to make radiation therapy safer as well as more effective • There patient being diagnosed with lung cancer now visits many doctors to observe them all in one visit • Doctors have also invented a new tool called Cyber Knife it is painless, bloodless and uses many rays to kill lung cancer cells • they also want to come up with ways to preserve as much healthy tissue of the lung as possible
