  2. What is an abbreviation? • An abbreviation is a shortened form of a word (or phrase). • Abbreviations are often used to save time and space. • Some abbreviations are followed by a period (such as Mrs., Prof., ft. and Aug.), but some are not (such as cm, min, NY, and mph).

  3. Abbreviation #1In. Clues: • You might find this on your ruler. • You use it to measure your foot. • There are twelve of these in a foot. The answer is an INCH.

  4. Abbreviation #2Ft. Clues: • Mountains are usually measured with this. • You use it to measure how tall you are. • There are three of these in a yard. The answer is a FOOT.

  5. Abbreviation #3Yd. Clues: • You measure a football field with this. • Material for sewing is measured with this. • There are three feet in this. The answer is a YARD.

  6. Abbreviation #4Mi. Clues: • You see this when you are driving. • In track you might run this distance. • From Jefferson County to Dollywood is about 30 of these. The answer is a MILE.
