  1. My Twitter Chat (Non)-Experience CUIN 6345 Maxine Tan

  2. Situation • Even though I am a Twitter user (more of a follower than a tweeter), I have never participated nor knew much about Twitter chats. I was interested to look for Twitter chats related to education in Singapore and I found #edsg.

  3. PROBLEM! • HOWEVER, I missed the day of the scheduled chat which is every Tuesday night, 8pm-9pm Singapore time, which is Monday morning here in Houston. I did not realisethat Twitter chats happened during schedule timesinstead of the usual hash tag tweets. I looked for others such as #edchat but realised that I missed it was well because it was on Tuesday.

  4. Resolution • I have resolved to join a Twitter chat next week or the week after if possible, preferably #edsg because I think that the local context will be more relevant to me.

  5. Temporary Solutions • Since I could not join any live Twitter chats, I did a couple of things to make up for the setback:- I searched for archives of past chats to get an idea of what a Twitter chat is like.- I looked up Twitter chat related information to see if there are any tools that people use to help make participation and archival easier- I searched for lists of popular Twitter chat hashtags and schedules for future reference.

  6. Chat Archives • It was really interesting reading the chat archives of #edchathttp://edchat.pbworks.com/w/page/63789500/2%2019. I found a consolidation of tweets for #edsg at http://tweetchat.com/room/edsg but this was not the dedicated archives for the Twitter chat sessions. There was also a Prezi presentation of #edsghttp://prezi.com/4etab0g4hx5q/edsg-6-months-on/ which was informative.

  7. Helpful Tools • There are several helpful websites that can allow people to monitor, participate, and consolidate tweets better. I had only heard of and used Twitterfall and Tweetdeck before so the rest are new to me.- www.Tweetchat.com- www.Twitterfall.com- www.TweetGrid.com- www.Twubs.com- Tweetdeck- Hootsuite

  8. Popular Chats and Schedules • http://www.creativeeducation.co.uk/blog/index.php/2010/12/top-twitter-hashtags-for-uk-teachers/ This website has popular UK Twitter chats and because the Singapore education system is closely linked to the UK’s system, this would be useful for me. • http://www.gnosisarts.com/home/Tweetchat_Wiki/By_Day List of Twitter chat hashtags with schedules. • http://tweetreports.com/twitter-chat-schedule/ Another list of hash tags and schedules. • http://cybraryman.com/chats.htmlCybrary Man has a list too. • http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/twitter-chat-guide/ Interesting pointers on how to host a Twitter chat. • http://janetfouts.com/how-to-participate-in-a-tweet-chat/ Netiquette involved in Twitter chat.
