  1. Dyad Partnership Candace Vaal & Whitney Turrieta

  2. Stepping Stones… We began our relationship with the understanding that we would be sharing ideas and credit as we collaborated to create two presentations. We used the texts, Crucial Conversations (Patterson, Grenny, McMillian, & Switzler, 2002), and True Partnership (Zaiss, 2002), as stepping stones to achieve our goals.

  3. Building Our Relationship… We began our communication via email and Facebook, both in open forums and private communication, depending on the appropriateness of the content. We followed the items on our checklist, one of which is “foster and encourage open communication”.

  4. Making our Relationship a Priority We set aside time every week or two to meet in person and discuss our progress. We agreed on a division of labor and reviewed each others work, taking care to remain open to suggestions. Our dyad was enriched at our meetings by the presence of other classmates, helping our creative juices flow and giving us helpful feedback.

  5. Dyad as Self Care Our meetings helped us move toward completion of our required projects, but they also gave us a forum to vent our frustrations and share our experiences, enriching our relationship.

  6. Teamwork By honoring one of our guidelines at the outset of acting and speaking with respect, we were able to adhere to another of our guidelines, to foster and encourage open communication. By doing this, we didn’t have any conflicts to resolve.

  7. Division of Labor We were both honest about our skills, limitations, and abilities. By acknowledging each others strengths and weaknesses, we were able to stay out of the drift and focus on our connection, as suggested by Zaiss (2002).

  8. Being Creative The presentation assignment on Crucial Conversations gave us the opportunity to collaborate and explore a new presentation format. Expanding our dyad to include other group members helped us learn more about the format we were using (Thanks Misty and Teri!)

  9. Continuing our Relationship Because we took the time to reach agreements and establish a connection in person, we can coordinate our efforts on our last project much as we did our first – over coffee at our computers, but our relationship has developed in such a manner that we can communicate effectively from home.
