What is a home school • A non-public school in which one or more children of not more than two families or households receive academic instruction from parents or legal guardians, or a member of either household. • Home schools will look very different from house hold to house hold depending on teaching styles, goals and organization by parents. • In 2003 the estimated number of students homeschooled was 1,096,000, 2.2 percent of all school aged students • Today this number is estimated to be over 2 million

  3. Requirement to start a home school by law • Notifying the state by completing a “Notice of Intent to Operate a School” • Locate your high school or college diploma, or an equivalent. This must be kept on file to in compliance with the law. • Maintain attendance records on each student • Maintain immunization records on each student • Operate on a regular schedule for at least nine calendar months of the year • Establish a school name • Administer a nationally standardized test for each student every year. • Notify the Department of Administration, Division of Non-Public Education, when closing your school. • http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/enactedlegislation/statutes/html/byarticle/chapter_115c/article_39.html

  4. Successful home schooling • Must begin with a dedicated parent or guardian • Teacher must be properly informed • With an organized lesson plan • Adequate resources • Budgeting • Flexibility • Social and community involvement

Drawbacks to home schooling • The parent may overdo their role as the teacher and either be to strict or too lenient toward student • Family conflicts- the simple fact that you will be with your child for the majority of the day • Parents may lack sufficient skills like academic knowledge or teaching ability • Child missing interaction with other children the same age of the student • Financial restraints- a family must fully fund their own home school
