  1. Chemical reactions Rx By Hunter Edwards

  2. Definition of chemical reaction The process In which one or more substances is changed into another. http://www.thefreedictionary.com/chemical+reaction Examples: sodium metal and chlorine gas combined with water equals sodium chloride, or table salt Another chemical reaction is something as simple as iron rusting. (the change in color.)

  3. Signs of a chemical reaction • Bubbling or a gas will be produced • A change in temperature • Light will be given off • Change in color • Energy is produced • http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_are_the_5_signs_of_a_chemical_reaction

  4. Types of reactions • Exothermic reactions- Reactions that give off heat when extra energy from the reaction is released. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exothermic_reaction • Endothermic reactions- Process in which the reaction absorbs heat and releases cold. • An example of an endothermic reaction would be pouring the contents of an ice pack into a beaker then breaking the bag and pouring in the liquid. The temperature inside the beaker will drop dramatically. http://homechemistry.blogspot.com/2008/04/endothermic-reactions.html

  5. Types of chemical reactions, cont. • Combustion-When carbon combines with another element to produce water and carbon dioxide. • Decomposition-Opposite of a synthesis reaction, breaks down an element to smaller parts. http://misterguch.brinkster.net/6typesofchemicalrxn.html Synthesis-Two or more “easy” substances react to form a more complex substance. Example: H2+O2=H2O

  6. Exothermic reactions An exothermic reaction would be when you start a gas engine, the gasoline is reacting with the igniter makes a spark inside the engine and it starts up giving off heat. Another reaction would be adding concentrated acid to water, the acid blends with the water giving off heat as the acid is diluted to a safer level, giving off energy during the process. http://wildeboer-fitch.wikispaces.com/file/view/video-%20Na%20%2B%20Cl.mp4

  7. An example of an endothermic reaction would be ice, the water reacts with the extremely cold temperatures within the freezer which cause it to freeze to be a solid. http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Endothermic-reaction • http://chemed.chem.purdue.edu/demos/movies/large_movies/16.2.mov Endothermic reactions

  8. Combustions • Wood burning is an example of a combustion because the wood is reacting with O2 gas along with a spark or an ignition. • Combustion reactions are nearly always exothermic, giving off heat. http://www.iun.edu/~cpanhd/C101webnotes/chemical%20reactions/combustion.html • In a combustion reaction O2 is always a reactant!!

  9. Decomposition Decomposition reactions occur when compounds separate into smaller elements. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemical_decomposition Video link http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/4c/Chemical_decompoition.gif Formula: A+B=AB

  10. Law of conservation Mass of substance produced is equal to the mass of chemicals being reacted. Products-Mass of substances produced Reactants-Mass of reacted substances. http://www.mi.mun.ca/users/edurnfor/1100/atomic%20structure/tsld004.htm

  11. Atoms during a chemical reaction During a chemical reaction the atoms are moved around to cause the chemical composition of the molecule to change.

  12. Replacement reactions • Single replacement- A single element replaces another element in a compound. • Double replacement-Two parts of two compounds switch places with each other to form two new compounds. http://www.usoe.k12.ut.us/curr/science/sciber00/8th/matter/sciber/chemtype.htm

  13. Synthesis reaction Synthesis reaction- Two or more easy substances combine to make a more complex substance. An example would be:H2+O2=H20. Another example would be Magnesium added to two molecules of oxygen equals Magnesium Oxide. http://www.usoe.k12.ut.us/curr/science/sciber00/8th/matter/sciber/chemtype.htm Chemical Formula is A+X=AX An example of both a synthesis reaction and an exothermic reaction is 2MG+O2 which equals 2MgO
