Nature of Work • All dispatchers are assigned a specific territory and have responsibility for all communications within that area • Keep records • Logs • Schedules of the calls that they receive and of the transportation vehicles that they monitor and control • Listen and communicate effectively

  4. Types of Dispatchers • 911 operators • Police, Fire Ambulance • Truck • Trucking companies • Coordinate trucks • Bus • Coordinate bus routes

  5. Types of Dispatchers Continued • Train • Movement of trains safely and timely • Know track conditions, maintenance, other train positions • Taxi Cabs • Dispatch taxis in response to request • Tow Truck • Road service • Utilities • Monitor Gas, Water, Electric lines

  6. Work Environment • Hectic –many calls could come in • Remain calm in emergency situations • Sit for a long time • Use computers, phones, 2-way radios • View monitors video displays

  7. Training • Entry –level workers • Trained on the job • Many states require a type of training certification • Pass a written, oral, and performance test
