  1. The Berlin Blockade and the Berlin Airlift

  2. Learning Outcomes • Pupils should understand why the Berlin Blockade happened. This will include the events that took place in the led up to the Blockade. • What was the Berlin Airlift? • What was so significant about the airlift and how did this affect relations between the two superpowers?

  3. First Major Crisis • The first major crisis concerned Germany. Both sides recognised that Germany could play a crucial role in the centre of Europe.

  4. What each side wanted to do • As we have touched upon before, the US and the USSR had a very different outlook on what should happen to Germany. America wanted German economic recovery to boost world trade, so it gave Marshall Aid to the western zones. The Soviet Union were more concerned about their own recovery and wanted to keep Germany permanently weak to prevent another invasion.
