  9. 2008 - 2018+ Data Rates • Today we process <1 Mbps (DMSP & POES) • In 2005/8 NPP/NPOESS will process 20 Mbps • Tropospheric Wind Lidar remote sensing from space could add another 10 Mbps • SARs could add 600+ Mbps peak data rate • Provide soil moisture profiles • Coastal sea surface height, temperature, winds • Near shore bathymetry • Coastal Imagery • Surf conditions (surf zone, breaking waves, currents) • Ocean Salinity

Future Ground Systems -- 2025 • Potential Orders of Magnitude Increase in Data Rates • Higher demand for reduced latency • Flexible NPOESS Ground Systems Architecture in place • Additional non-NPOESS Demand for monumental volumes of data processing (from multiple sources) • Geostationary, L-1 and L-2 sources • Ground system sources -- radar, in situ, et al. • Low earth orbit systems (other than NPOESS) • Global Precipitation Mission (NPOESS partial element) • Increased ship-based measurement sources • NASA web of sensors concept fulfills this need NPOESS on the Web -- http://npoess.noaa.gov
