  2. ISS@ALICE.LHC.CERN.CH History of ISS participation at ALICE ISS has a long time commitment to High Energy Physics subjects, starting from cosmic rays and fixed target emulsion experiments and moving to the more challenging modern colliders. ALICE is one of the latest, but certainly, one of the most interesting heavy-ion experiment we are participating in, since the preparation phase until now (data taking and analysis). Our contributions to ALICE started from 2000 in the frame of a long standing ISS-JINR Dubna collaboration having offline computing as main topic.

  3. ISS@ALICE.LHC.CERN.CH History of ISS participation at ALICE : -2000 : contributions to ALICE Offline through our close collaborators from JINR-Dubna -2006 : signature of ISS MoU with ALICE-CERN - since 2006 : contributions with: software physics computing power

  4. ISS@ALICE.LHC.CERN.CH ISS-ALICE Group Structure : Team Leader: PhD. Eng. D. Hasegan - 4 PhD physicists : Ph.D. Eng. D. Hasegan, Ph.D. M. Haiduc, Ph.D. D. Felea, Ph.D. S. Zgura - 4 Ph.D. Students: A.Danu, C. Mitu, A. Sevcenco, I. Stan - 1 Physicist Phys. Eng. M. Gheata

  5. ISS@ALICE.LHC.CERN.CH Outline 1.ALICE Offline : design and developing of computing infrastructure for simulation and data analysis. • Mihaela Gheata 2.ALICE Physics Working Group 4 (PWG4) : participating in the group of High pt and photons group (PWG4) • Andrea Danu, Daniel Felea, Ciprian Mitu, Adrian Sevcenco 3.ALICE GRID : participation in the common computing effort: contributing with computing power, storage and maintenance man-power • Sorin Zgura, Ionel Stan, Adrian Sevcenco 4. ALICE shifts : contribution to experiment - 2010 = 56.2 - 2011 = 51 + 48 (booked)

  6. ISS@ALICE.LHC.CERN.CH 1. ALICE Offline : - Continuous contributions since 2000 Andrei Gheata, Mihaela Gheata - Main directions: • ALICE software developing • Maintenance • (user) support - Main contributions up to now : • Geometrical modeler software and mis- alignment software used by ALICE collaboration • Software used in simulation, reconstruction and event display • Developing of and support to Analysis Framework used in AliROOT

  7. ISS@ALICE.LHC.CERN.CH Alignment The Geometric Modeler allows representation of the REAL ALICEdetector with all real-world mis-alignments Event display The Module for very advancedevent-display, also uses the geometric modeler

  8. ISS@ALICE.LHC.CERN.CH Geometrical modeler - main engine for geometry building and tracking - responsible for precision of geometry navigation and positioning - has a pivotal role in simulation and data analysis

  9. ISS@ALICE.LHC.CERN.CH ANALYSIS module • It was designed to take advantage of the existing technologies for parallel computing • It provides access to CPU and data to several concurrent analysis modules in the same time (same process) • Decisive contributions to ALICE Offline by Andrei and Mihaela Gheata

  10. ISS@ALICE.LHC.CERN.CH 2. ALICE Physics Working Group 4 (PWG4) : ISS ALICE group is involved in QCD phenomena – QGP - one important phenomenon in QCD matter : partonic showers • jet phenomena : • allow study of QCD matter – jet tomography (give information about gluon density and geometry of the medium). - quenching - important signal of QGP • currently working in jet studies : • jets spectra, • fragmentation function.

  11. ISS@ALICE.LHC.CERN.CH The above drawing illustrates the way the QCD Monte-Carlo models simulate a proton-proton collision in which a hard 2-to-2 parton scattering with transverse momentum, PT(hard), occurred.

  12. ISS@ALICE.LHC.CERN.CH - pp data analysis is under way - finished re-factoring of the previous code based on the CDF cone algorithm - now we are able to analyze and compare the outputs of different jet finders

  13. ISS@ALICE.LHC.CERN.CH Charge multiplicity of the leading jet (jet1) in the Pt bin (pp data) PRELIMINARY Track distribution relative to jet centroid (pp data)

  14. ISS@ALICE.LHC.CERN.CH The average Pt sumof all charged particles as a function of the transverse momentum of the leading jet (pp data) PRELIMINARY The average number of all charged particles as a function of the transverse momentum of the leading jet (pp data)

  15. ISS@ALICE.LHC.CERN.CH 3. ISS - COMPUTING 320 CPU640 GB memory140 TB storage space  30% of total Romanian Tier 2 Federation 2% of ALICE computing (last 1 year period)
