1. affection • A fond or tender feeling. Sometimes my affection for sweets gets me into trouble.
2. appeal • To make an earnest request; to ask. • To be of interest to; to be attractive to • An earnest request for help • The power to attract or be of interest Any kind of dessert is appealing to me.
3. clasp • To grasp or hold tightly • A strong grasp or hold • Something, such as a hook or fastener, that holds two parts together. When I saw the hot fudge sundae, I clasped my spoon tightly in anticipation.
4. conspicuous • Easily or plainly seen The one white cupcake was conspicuous among the pink ones.
5. contribute • To give along with others who are giving. • To have a part in bringing about. At last night’s dinner, I decided to contribute my favorite kind of cake.
6. declare • To make known; to state openly “This is the best dessert ever,” my friend declared.
7. eloquent • Skilled at speaking or writing; having the power to move people. The president of the dessert club gave an eloquent speech about the proper way to ice a cake.
8. exhibit • To show in public • An item or collection of items in a public show. The cupcake exhibit is always my favorite at the cake show.
9. ferry • A boat that carries people and goods back and forth across a stretch of water. • To move people or goods by boat across a stretch of water. One of the cakes fell when it was ferried over from the mainland.
10. immigrant • A person who comes into a country to live there. Maria, a Spanish immigrant, made the prize winning dessert from her home country.
11. lofty • Very tall or high. • Noble in feeling or high in ideals. • Showing a too proud or superior attitude. The loftiest cake was decorated with red and yellow flowers.
12. pedestal • A base or support on which something stands. Fancy pedestals make it easy to display your desserts.
13. persecute • To treat cruelly or harshly because of political, religious, or other differences. I did not mean to persecute you with this presentation about desserts.
14. poverty • The state of being poor. Everyone should make a dessert tonight to donate to people who are living in poverty. (. . . Or maybe just to your Language Arts Teacher.)
