  3. Standards vs. Curriculum • Often these two are thought of interchangeably • Video – Knowing the Difference

  4. Curriculum (What) • Curriculum - is an organized program of learning, usually segregated by subject area, composed of four main categories: content, instruction, assessment, and context.

  5. Instruction (How) • Instruction - Process by which knowledge, attitudes, or skills are deliberately conveyed -- includes the total instructional process, from planning and implementation through evaluation and feedback

  6. Resources (Support) • Resources - Available means or assets, including sources of assistance, supply, or support.

  7. Assessments • The process by which we determine what students have learned. • Formative – for learning (guides future instruction) • Summative – of learning (achievement) • Balanced – Different purposes

  8. Sample – 7th Grade • Standards - RI.7.1. Cite several pieces of textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. • Curriculum - Cite several pieces of evidence to support an analysis of informational text. • Instruction - Teaching MLA • Resources - A Long Walk to Waters, DBQ’s, Science Articles, etc.. • Assessments – Research Paper, State Test, DBQ’s, etc..

  10. The Cycle • While the standards stay the same, all others are cyclical in nature and require continual analysis and revision.

The Challenges – Process and Timeline • Typically curriculum development starts with the big picture • Standards – CCLS • Possible HS research paper requirement • Curriculum – NYSED anticipated late summer/fall • We have looked at other state’s curriculum • Their tests do not look like our 3-8 ELA assessments • Their tests do not look like the PARCC samples • Sense of urgency related to resources/guidance/lesson plans to help w/CCLS

Our Vision • Move ahead despite the lack of curriculum fully developed and aligned to CCLS from SED. • Balanced Literacy Framework Approach for the early years • Evaluate the modules from SED • Develop Common Formative Assessments • Implement a writing continuum • Look at other resources to support our work.
