Polyatomic Ions

Polyatomic Ions. Polyatomic ions are ions made up of more than one atom There are 15 polyatomic ions (ions made up of more than one atom) I will give you the chart on page 178 of the text for the test, so when you see the formula, you need to be able to tell me the name.

  1. Polyatomic Ions • Polyatomic ions are ions made up of more than one atom • There are 15 polyatomic ions (ions made up of more than one atom) • I will give you the chart on page 178 of the text for the test, so when you see the formula, you need to be able to tell me the name.

  2. Here are some of them…. • OH- hydroxide • SO42- sulfate • SO32- sulfite • O22- peroxide • NO2- nitrite • NO3- nitrate • MnO4- permanganate

  3. The same rules apply when dealing with polyatomic ions. (remember, the charge associated with the polyatomic ion applies to the entire ion) K+ + CN-→ KCN 2Na+ + O22-→ Na2O2 Mg2+ + 2NO2- → Mg(NO2)2 (by putting parenthesis around the Nitrite portion of the compound, the following subscript tells us that there are 2 nitrite ions for every one Magnesium ion in this compound)

  4. More Practice: Li+ + MnO4-→ Ca2+ + NO2-→ Na+ + SO32-→

  5. More Practice: Li+ + MnO4-→ LiMnO4 Ca2+ + 2NO2-→ 2Na+ + SO32-→ ite

  6. More Practice: Li+ + MnO4-→ LiMnO4 Lithium Permanganate Ca2+ + 2NO2-→ 2Na+ + SO32-→

  7. More Practice: Li+ + MnO4-→ LiMnO4 Lithium Permanganate Ca2+ + 2NO2-→ Ca(NO2)2 2Na+ + SO32-→

  8. More Practice: Li+ + MnO4-→ LiMnO4 Lithium Permanganate Ca2+ + 2NO2-→ Ca(NO2)2 Calcium Nitrite 2Na+ + SO32-→

  9. More Practice: Li+ + MnO4-→ LiMnO4 Lithium Permanganate Ca2+ + 2NO2-→ Ca(NO2)2 Calcium Nitrite 2Na+ + SO32-→ Na2SO3

  10. More Practice: Li+ + MnO4-→ LiMnO4 Lithium Permanganate Ca2+ + 2NO2-→ Ca(NO2)2 Calcium Nitrite 2Na+ + SO32-→ Na2SO3 Sodium Sulfite

  11. Naming Compounds that have TRANSITION METALS • because transition metals can have more than one charge, you must include the charge of the metal, in the form of a Roman Numeral, in the name. For example… • Fe 2+ + 2OH- Fe(OH)2 • The product is named Iron (II) Hydroxide • Fe3+ + 3OH-  Fe(OH)3 • This product would be named Iron (III) Hydroxide
