  2. Coming to Power • When King Henry II of France died, he left 4 sons • After the first three failed miserably at the throne, King Louis XIV came to power and proved worthy

  3. Skepticism • As France regained political power, a new intellectual movement developed • Known as Skepticism, this was the idea that nothing can ever be known for certain • To doubt old ideas was the first step toward finding truth

  4. King’s Unusual Attributes • Standing at only 5’ 5”, Louis wore high heeled shoes to make him appear taller • He also believed that, as with the sun, all power radiated from him

  5. Louis Fights Disastrous Wars • Under Louis, France became the largest country and most powerful country in Europe • With this boasting, France got into financial trouble fighting wars they could not afford

  6. War of the Spanish Succession • Tired of hardship, the French people longed for peace • Louis and France got caught up battling England and the Netherlands and ended up becoming broke and losing almost all of their colonies in the process

  7. Louis’ Legacy • When he died in his sleep, France rejoiced • Although he left behind a country that became recognized as a power in Europe, he left a 200 Billion Dollar debt in his family’s name
