TSL Transforming STEM Learning The Transforming STEM Learning (TSL) program combines interests and resources of various programs within the Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings (DRL) to investigate new challenges in STEM learning. TSL is uniquely positioned to encourage and support large-scale cross-cutting projects that are needed to design, develop, and study truly innovative STEM learning environments. Exploring the opportunities and challenges of innovative visions of the future for STEM learning Although these cross-cutting projects will draw upon work in Discovery Research K-12, Informal Science Education, Research and Evaluation on Education in Science and Engineering, and Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers, they should also have a scope that extends well beyond any of those programs individually. visit www.nsf.gov keyword TSL Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings

  2. Challenge 1: Studying Existing Examples of Innovative Models for STEM Education. TSL invites proposals fordescriptive and analytic research projects that will study existing innovations to determine how and what students are learning, the essential features of successful programs, and why various practices are or are not effective. Challenge 2: Designing, Developing, and Studying New Structural Models for STEM Learning Environments. TSL invites proposals from interdisciplinary teams designed to test comprehensive and radical restructuring of STEM education and which combine the resources of diverse and networked organizations to challenge traditional patterns of teaching and learning. Award Types Research– Applies to Challenge 1 only and may range from intensive qualitative case studies to extensive quantitative studies that examine efficacy and effectiveness. Planning and Pilot – Applies to Challenge 2 only and aims to develop and study potentially transformative new models for STEM learning. Due Dates The TSL deadline for full proposals will be March 11, 2011 and March 9, 2012. The program solicitation number is NSF 10-602.
