Enhancing Youth Well-Being: York Youth Council's Campaigns for Schools
The York Youth Council, representing young people aged 11-18 across the city, is advocating for vital initiatives to enhance student well-being in schools. Key campaigns include "Breathing Spaces," promoting quiet zones for students to escape stress, and the "Minding Minds Award," recognizing schools that actively support mental health. Feedback from students highlights the need for safe spaces and better support. Our goal is to create an environment focused on well-being and communication, fostering a culture where all students thrive. Join us in making a difference!

Young People Working Together Improving York 2014: Young People’sSuggestions
Introduction • York Youth Council is a independent organisation • We’re from all over the city • We’re 11-18 Year olds • We represent the views of young people • We recently worked with the council to bid for European Youth Capital 2017
Our campaigns: 2014 • Breathing Spaces. Our target is for all schools in York to have quiet, managed places where students can escape stressful situations. • Minding Minds Award. Mental Health and Well-being Award for York Secondary Schools.
Breathing Spaces: Reasons • Year 8 pupils across the city said: • Bullying happens in corridors and public spaces and tends to be in a verbal form. • A recent survey by YoungMinds showed: • 33% of children and Young People thought they had no one to talk to at school when they felt stressed or anxious. • And stress, caused by school issues, home life, friendship issues (and many more), affects everyone.
Breathing Spaces: the Idea • All schools in York (secondary and primary) to have rooms that are: • Managed by a member of staff • Open to all pupils at break times and at lunch • Quiet and peaceful
Breathing Spaces: What you can do • All schools in York should provide: • A ‘breathing space’ room • A welcoming environment • Open to all • Available at break and lunchtime • And managed by a member of staff at all times • That all students are aware of (well-publicised)
The Award • Created last year by York Youth Council • Ensuring secondary schools have consistent and robust methods to support pupils' well-being • And celebrating them with a Minding Minds standard of: • Bronze, Silver or Gold • 12-section checklist, completed by students from your school.
What’s different about this award? • Focuses on the ethos of your school. • Facilitates staff and student dialogue on challenging and, sometimes, stigmatised issues. • Gives your school an individual action plan, based on your results. • We want schools to adopt a well-being centred ethos. • This award is student-created, and student-led.
Get Involved • The award is ready for York • Information can be found in the information handbook • Who wants to sign up?
Communication • We feel there needs to be more communication between York Youth Council and the schools in York. We also wish to update on our campaigns. • Please can you write the contact details and name of yourself, or a relevant member of staff.
