  31. ‘Preaching’ in the Bible • Let’s look at the NT Greek words used in the Bible to describe ‘preaching.’ • We will see that preaching includes many activities and aspects.

  32. Word #1:Kerussein • means “to proclaim” and refers to someone being the “herald” who has a message that was sent or authorized by another • carries the idea of making a public announcement • is used in Ac 9:20 (‘…[Paul] began to preach in the synagogues…’), and Acts 10:42 (‘He commanded us to preach to the people…’)

  33. Word #2: Euangelizesthai • means “to bring good tidings or good news” • can be translated as “preach the gospel” or “preach the good news” • is used in Acts 14:7 (‘…they continued to preach the good news.’), and Acts 16:10 (‘…we got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.’).

  34. Two main words used for ‘preaching’ in the NT • Kerussein = to announce/proclaim • Euangelizesthai = to bring good news So, before you preach, remember that God wants to proclaim something, and offer something good! Also, when you listen to preaching, remember that God wants to give something good to you!

  35. Other NT words used to denote preaching • “didaskein” meaning “to teach divine truths” • “dialegesthai” which means “to dialogue or discourse with another person with a view to persuasion” • “lalein” which means “to talk, discuss, or to discourse”

  36. We become better preachers and as well better listeners when we reflect on these Greek words used to describe preaching.
