  2. Before I became a professor at NTU B.S. in Chemical Engineering National Taiwan University, 1967 M.S. in Chemical Engineering National Taiwan University, 1969 Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering National Taiwan University, 1976

  3. My academic positions till now • Lecturer/NTU 1969~1976 • Associate Professor/ NTU 1976~1980 • Professor/NTU 1980~now (Dept. head in 1986~1992) • Visiting scholar University of Wisconsin, 1977~1978 MIT, 1984~1985 Kyoto University, 1992~1993

  4. What I served to the academic communities • Editor-in-chief/ J. of ChinIChE, 1987-1992 • Coordinator of Chemical Engineering Research/ NSC Engineering Division, 1996-2000 • Director of Chemical Engineering SBIR research/ Administration of Economic Affairs, 2002-2004 • Associate Editor/ J. Process Control, 1998~ 2006 • Asia/Australasia Regional Editor/ J. Process Control, 2006.4~, • Vice President of Taiwan Institute of Chemical Engineers (was known as Chinese Institute of Chemical Engineers), 2009~2010 • President, APCChE(Asian and Pacific Confedration of Chemical Engineering) 2009~2010

  5. How I struggled through my career • My first journal paper (in English) published in 1970 in ChinIChE • In the years of 1970~1980, most papers are published in domestic journals. • My first paper published in an international journal in 1980---Chemical Engineering Communications (Gordon and Breach). • First paper appeared in I&EC journal in 1985, • First paper appeared in Chem. Eng. Sci. in 1986.* • First paper in Int.J. Control was published in 1987.* • First paper in AIChE was published in 1990. • First paper in JPC was published in 1994.** Since then, papers were published mostly in many well known Journals. For example, AIChE, I&EC, CES, JPC, IEE, Computers &ChE, etc. In last five years, I am the author or co-author of 42 journal papers.

  6. How to become an active member in an academic community • Visiting outstanding university for research • Do research with outstanding scholars • Interaction with international scholars by bilateral visiting and dialogues • Active participation to international conferences • Hosting post-conference meeting in Taiwan • Hosting international conference starting from small region or communities

  7. Know something about JPC Topics covered include: • Control applications • Plant monitoring • Plant-wide control • Process control systems • Control techniques and algorithms • Process modelling and simulation • Design methods

  8. W. Marquardt, AVT - Prozesstechnik, RWTH Aachen University Editor: Germany Regional Editor (Asia/Australasia): Hsiao-Ping Huang Department of Chemical Engineering, National Taiwan University, Taiwan Regional Editor (Europe/Africa/Middle East): D. Dochain Universite catholique de Louvain, Belgium Regional Editor (The Americas): N.L. Ricker University of Washington, Seattle, USA Reviews Editor: F.J. Doyle Department of Chemical Engineering, University of California, Santa Barbara, USA & 21 Associate Editors from different countries Know something about JPC Editorial Board:

  9. Questions to remind author: • Is the subject of the paper consistent with the scope of the journal to be submitted? • Has this material been published before in English? • Does the scientific content justify the space it will occupy? • Can any parts of the paper be shortened or omitted without loss of scientific content? • Are there any errors of fact or logic? • Are all the figures necessary?

  10. Questions to remind author (Continued): • Is the number of significant figures in the tables justified? Is it necessary to include both graphs and tables based on the same data? • Does the summary (normally 50-150 words) bring out the main points of the paper? • Is the title suitable and adequate? • Are the literature references adequate and publicly accessible?

  11. Features of a publishable paper • New and good idea • Sound theory with good illustration or experimental validation • Reproducible results • Good logic • Easy reading English---use simple sentence, precise wording, and proper length

  12. How to publish good papers • Work hard • Work with heart • Have good luck

  13. Thank you for your attention
