### Solving Systems

Word Problems

Steps for Solving Word Problems

Step 1: Define the 2 variables

Step 2: Set up your 2 equations

Step 3: Solve the system of equations

Day 1
• We are going to focus on the first two steps today.
Examples

Flying with the wind a plane went 259 mph. Flying into the same wind, the plane only went 181 mph. Find the speed of the plane in still air and the speed of the wind.

Examples

The school that Perry goes to is selling tickets to the annual talent show. On the first day of ticket sales, the school sold 3 adult tickets and 11 child tickets for a total of \$130. The school took in \$122 on the second day by selling 3 adult tickets and 10 child tickets. Find the price of an adult ticket and the price of a child ticket.

Day 2

We now know how to set up the equations. Let’s look at solving the equations and checking our answers.

Examples

Shreya and Aliyah each improved their yards by planting daylilies and shrubs. They bought their supplies from the same store. Shreya spent \$300 on 14 daylilies and 12 shrubs. Aliyah spent \$322 on 14 daylilies and 14 shrubs. Find the cost of one daylily and the cost of one shrub.

• Daylily: \$12, Shrub: \$11 B) Daylily: \$11, Shrub: \$5

C) Daylily: \$10, Shrub: \$7 D) Daylily: \$15, Shrub: \$14

Examples

Shayna’s school is selling tickets to a play. On the first day of ticket sales, the school sold 12 senior citizen tickets and 8 student tickets for a total of \$252. The school took in \$109 on the second day by selling 1 senior citizen ticket and 8 student tickets. What is the price each of 1 senior citizen ticket and 1 student ticket?

• Senior citizen ticket: \$20, student ticket: \$11
• Senior citizen ticket: \$13, student ticket: \$12
• Senior citizen ticket: \$7, student ticket: \$14
• Senior citizen ticket: \$10, student ticket: \$11
