International Programs • Why have international programs? • Prepare Missouri students for globally interdependent economy and to meet global competition • Prepare Missouri students to function in a culturally and linguistically diverse international environment • Attract international students to study at the University of Missouri • Direct economic benefit • Diversity on campus • Long-term contribution to US economy • Globalization of research • Partner universities provide access for UM faculty and students

Study Abroad • University of Missouri participates in university-sponsored study abroad programs • UM- Columbia • A record 829 students participated in 2005-06 --- an increase of 58% since 2001 • UM- Kansas City • 256 students participated in 2005-06 --- an increase of 50% since 2001 • UM- Rolla • 48 students participated in 2005-06--- an increase of 534% since 2001 • UM- St. Louis • 196 students participated in 2005-06 --- an increase of 130% since 2001 • UM program of excellence • Summer law program in China: UM- Kansas City

International Students • International students enrolled at the University of Missouri • UM- Columbia • 1336 international students representing 95 different countries (fall 2006) • UM- Kansas City • 732 international students representing 69 different countries (fall 2006) • UM- Rolla • 627 international students representing 57 different countries (fall 2006) • UM- St. Louis • 796 international students representing 113 different countries (fall 2006) • The University has 3,491 international students enrolled in courses system-wide • UM program of excellence English as a second language program: UM- Rolla

Economic Development • The Missouri Department of Economic Development is seeking to double Missouri's exports to maintain our economic vitality in the 21st century. • Growing economic competitiveness requires a higher level of global competency. The University of Missouri is preparing its students to work and live in this morecompetitive environment. • Many of our international students become important contributors to the US economy after graduation. • UM program of excellence International business program: UM- St. Louis

Research and Scholarship • Research promotes collaborations with scholars from over 80 countries across the world • Faculty research involves all disciplines to improve the lives of people worldwide • The US depends on the international community to maintain its technological leadership • UM programs of excellence • The Center for Phytological Studies (TICIPS): UM- Columbia

How the University Measures Up • The University of Missouri maintains a wide variety of international programs. • The University of Missouri continues to monitor progress in international programs. • Criteria for measuring progress: • Participation in programs • Longevity of programs • External research dollars • National recognition
