  1. VBL Introduction • Crystal 25 • chris.myers@versi.edu.au • Rev 1.2

  2. What is VeRSI

  3. VeRSI eResearchWhere Science, Technology and Creativity Meet

  4. VeRSI • VeRSI Enabled Projects • > Ambulatory motion studies • > Distributed treatment planning database • > Neuroscience and biomedical imaging • > Virtual beam Line design • > Management of laboratory data and resources

  5. VeRSI • VeRSI is about science. • Very, very fast science. Intro image from Steve Melnikoff

  6. VBL Introduction

  7. Why we need a VBL • Science particularly that based on large instruments increasingly involves distributed, global collaborations enabled by the internet and using very large scale data collections, high performance computing resources, tele-science (remote access and control of instrumentation) and collaborative visualisation. For the Australian Synchrotron the Virtual Beam Line will be a model for this sort of distributed access.

  8. VBL Overview

  9. VBL Workflow

  10. Exam System • The online exam system allows remote users to take an exam via the internet. The features of this system include: • Multiple choice questions • Multiple answer multiple choice • Automatic marking • Picture and/or text questions and answers • Exam timer • Examines are emailed the result of the exam • Examiners are emailed outcome of an examines exam and what questions they got wrong

  11. Exam System • Video Presentation • Slide Show • Extra related files for each exam • Question pools • Automatic Image resizing • A re-sit exam option, which allows examines to re-sit an exam without having to go through slides again. • Examines can email Examiners questions before starting an exam.

  14. Exam System

  15. Exam System • Important message • The exam system will be open source.

  16. FSM • FSM web page with live data

  17. FSM • Base system By ASP Controls team • Only available onsite. • We modified the same program to write its output to mySQL • and then added a front-end web page. • Web version is real-time.

  18. eVBL • The eVBL or educational Virtual Beam Line has been developed as a support and development tool for the VBL proper as well as delivering a useful environment the education and outreach of synchrotron science to educators. • In its support and development role the eVBL we deliver primary rich client interface screen that will encompass basic functions such as motor control, sample / overview video capture, sample interpretation, training, usability, client interaction and support requirements. It will also show that VBL technology is viable and achievable from the Australian synchrotron. • In its education role the eVBL will deliver an invaluable source of outreach from the ASP and VeRSI into secondary collage and 1st year Higher education as both an introduction to synchrotron science at the ASP and an experimental platform to perform a basic double-slit optical experiments.
