  1. Warm-Up: 3 minutes • Write these sentences in your warm-up section. Circle the COMPLETE PREDICATE and underline the simple predicate Simple predicate is one word explaining what the subject is doing. The simple predicate is also known as the verb. • Millions of Americans watch displays of fireworks on the Fourth of July. • Pyrotechnics is another name for fireworks.

  2. “Buzz” Word3 mins. • Interpret (v.) explain the meaning of (information, words, or actions). Sentence: The evidence is difficult to interpret.

  3. Reading Art: An Artistic Perspective on Family20 minutes • What do you know about art? • What are the similarities and differences between reading a written text and viewing a piece of art? • What can an author do in a written text that an artist cannot do in a visual text? • What advantages does an artist have? • How can an artist make an argument or statement in a visual medium?

  5. Revise/Edit Expository Essay Intro.10 minutes • Re-write expository essay introduction focusing on thesis statement • Remember your thesis statement should list what you are going to discuss in your essay

  6. House on Mango Street/OER35 minutes • Choose one of Esperanza’s neighbors. How would you describe him/her? Use evidence from the text to support your answer.

  7. Thanksgiving: Changes in Perspective10 minutes • Quickwrite pg. 65 • Write about how Thanksgiving is celebrated in your home. What is the purpose of Thanksgiving? • Perspective: choose a holiday/celebration • How did you feel about it as a child? • How do you feel about it now? • How might you feel about it when you are older? *share with a shoulder partner

Thanksgiving: A Personal Historyby Jennifer New • This piece is about an adult reflecting on the Thanksgiving celebrations throughout her life • As we read highlight where the author shifts perspective from childhood to adolescence to adulthood • Then we are going to close read the first three paragraphs again • Underline words or phrases that indicate the author’s attitude toward Thanksgiving
