  1. Why Singing? Lesson 12 “Shout joyfully to the LORD, all the earth; Break forth in song, rejoice, and sing praises.” (Psalms 98:4)

  2. Psalms, Hymns & Spiritual Songs Christians are commandedto sing “psalms, hymns and spiritual songs” (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16) “Making melody in your heart to the Lord” “Singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord” A Psalmis a “pious song” (Thayer). The inspired poems of the Book of Psalms. Hymns are songs addressed to or in praise of a hero or deity (Acts 16:25; Mark 14:26; Heb. 2:12) Spiritual Song are “odes or songs relating to spiritual things in contradistinction from these which were sung in places of festivity and revelry” (Barnes). “Composed by spiritual men and moved in the sphere of spiritual things” (Trench).

  3. Why Singing? Everyone can participate (Psalm 67:1-5; Isaiah 42;10-12) Personally proclaiming praise and claiming the benefit of it (Psalms 104:33; 28:7) Singing reminds us of God’s work (Ps. 105:2-5) Singing encourages the heart and lifts the soul even in dark times (Acts 16:25; Psalm 42:8,11; Matthew 26:30) Singing is a great teaching tool (Col. 3:16) Singing is an outlet for thanksgiving (Psalms 95:1-2; 30:4; James 5:13)

  4. Why not instrumental music? Lesson 13 “Shout joyfully to the LORD, all the earth; Break forth in song, rejoice, and sing praises.” (Psalms 98:4)

  5. Instruments or Not?Why Should it Matter? God’s will deserves strict compliance Consider Nadab & Abihu (Lev. 10) and Saul (1 Sam. 15) Consider Deut. 4:2; 12:32; 2 John 9; Proverbs 30:5-6 He is never pleased with less, more or something else. God can and always has plainly declared what He expects of His worshipers (Ps.119:128ff. When He wanted instruments used to praise Him, He plainly said so IN THE LAW of the Jews (Psalm 150:1-6; 2 Chronicles 29:25-30) Note that the Psalms were law (John10:34; Psalm 82:6) What has God plainly declared in the New Testament?
