Proposed Testing Requirements for Accelerated Students • See Handouts • Key Points • Rule withdrawal – August 24, 2018 • Waiver Request • The state would pay for accelerated students to take either the ACT or the SAT once in high school. • For students who are double tested, the grade-level test would be used for accountability and the EOC would be used for graduation.

Commissioner’s Presentation on Assessment Commissioner Morath is seeking to share the testimony he provided to the House Public Education Committee last week to help answer any questions you might have or might get from educators or parents regarding assessment and lexiles. TEA will continue to listen to feedback from legislators, as well as educators across the state, to make improvements to the test development process as needed.  • https://tea.texas.gov/About_TEA/Government_Relations_and_Legal/GR/House_Public_Education_Committee/

  7. Middle School Advanced Pathways Survey • TEA is running a pilot program this spring to help identify barriers to accessing advanced math pathways in middle school and associated solutions to address these identified barriers. Please take this voluntary 10-minute survey to help identify common practices, barriers, and solutions. • https://tea.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3KqnLMRWSp9lehD • Pilot districts will use this data to inform their work in creating a best-practices guide to ensure middle school students have equitable access to the most appropriately rigorous math courses, including Algebra I in 8th grade. • Please reach out to the Special Projects Division at specialprojects@tea.texas.gov with questions.

  8. Statewide Birth-Needs Assessment Survey • The Texas Early Learning Council is requesting that local education agencies assist in distributing a survey to families with students enrolled in prekindergarten or receiving Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities (PPCD) services as well as teachers, administrators, and support staff of prekindergarten and PPCD programs. • Attached is a cover email with the survey link. If you are able, please send the email out on March 25, 2019, with at least one reminder prior to April 5, 2019. Questions intended for families and early childhood program and service providers are available in both English and Spanish. • The handout with the survey link is in the handout section of the curriculum uploads or can be found at https://tea.texas.gov/taa_letters.aspx

Distinguished Educator Talent Pool • The Texas Education Agency (TEA) would like to invite school and district leaders to recommend distinguished classroom teachers, specialists, and/or principals to be included in the Texas Distinguished Educator Talent Pool. These educators may be considered for membership to advisory boards and task forces, as well inclusion in special recognition programs. • For more information see the handout in the curriculum directors portal or visit https://tea.texas.gov/taa_letters.aspx.

  10. 2021-2022 Testing Calendar • TEA has released the 2021-2022 Student Assessment Testing Calendar. The draft is available for public review and is posted to the TEA website at https://tea.texas.gov/student.assessment/calendars/. • Comments and suggestions about the draft calendar should be sent to Test.Calendar@tea.texas.gov.

Using Student-Level Data from Interim Assessments – Training for Teachers • The Texas Education Agency (TEA) and Educational Testing Service (ETS) are providing information for teachers on how to use student-level data from the STAAR interim assessments.   14. Mental Health Trainings Designed for teachers, principals, parents, counselors, and community members. No cost to LEAs.

Trauma and Mindfulness Training • 4-hour TOT on June 13, 2019 • Designed to help educators understand: • the impact of trauma on brain development and mental health • how students with trauma backgrounds respond behaviorally • trauma-informed classroom strategies • simple mindfulness exercises to cope with stress to reduce trauma reactions

  16. Youth Mental Health First Aid • March 30, 2019 • Youth Mental Health First Aid teaches educators to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders.  • Lunch will be provided

  19. The Good News… • High School graduation rates are increasing • STAAR Test results are improving • Six-year state-wide higher education graduation rate at 61%

  20. The Not So Good News… • Overall, fewer students are enrolling in IHE • Disparities continue to exist, especially for economically disadvantaged students • Low number of students identified as “College Ready” • Fewer students completing freshman year without remediation

College Preparatory Courses • CCMR Accountability Measure • Meet Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Criteria in ELA/Reading and Mathematics. A graduate…successfully completing and earning credit for a college prep course. • Provide students a “college readiness” measure • Success course completion = “college ready” • Saves students & families time and money • No TSI testing required • Development education not required
