  2. What are formal commands? • Formal commands are used in situations when you want to ask someone to do something but you want to express it in a respectful way or you want to be really polite. • Abuelitos • Los mayores • Gente que no conoces • Etc.

  3. Formation of Ud./Uds. Commands • Take the yo form of the verb in the present tense: • Como • Hablo • Abro • Me cepillo • Me duermo Drop the “o” and switch the endings: -ar -e (Ud.) and -en (Uds.) -er/-ir -a (Ud.) and -an (Uds.)

  5. Present Tense pongo traigo vengo hago digo tengo oigo Ud. Uds. ponga pongan traiga traigan venga vengan haga hagan diga digan tenga tengan oiga oigan Be aware that some verbs have irregular 1st person singular forms in the present tense. This change is carried over to the commands.

  8. There are others that are just completely irregular… • Hay 5 irregulares… just remember SIDES • ser: sea, sean • ir: vaya, vayan • dar: dé, den • estar: esté, estén • saber: sepa, sepan

  9. Formation of Ud./Uds. Commands • Ejemplos: • Vayan a la tienda con su mamá. • No sean muchachos traviesos. • No les dé ningún chocolate a los niños. • ¡Esté contento! • Sepan el vocabulario.

Commands • To make the command negative… • Simply add a no before the command! • No hablen durante la prueba. • No saquen malas notas. • No lleguen tarde a la escuela. • No manejen locamente. • No sean malcriados con sus padres. • No paren de hacer su tarea. • No se levanten tarde. • No se acuesten sin cepillarse los dientes.

  12. Commands and pronouns • For Affirmative commands: • They must be attached to the end of the command and an accent placed on the next to last syllable of the basic command form. See how the following verbs are set up: cepille lean manden cepíllese léanlo mándenles Command w/ DOP Hábleme. Siéntense. Acuéstense. Pónganselo. Dénmelo. * Hágamelo. Command w/ RP Command w/ RP & DOP Command w/ IOP & DOP

Commands and pronouns • For Negative commands: • The pronoun must go after the “no” and before the command. • The command must be set up as follows: • no – pronoun (follow the RID rule if using 2 pronouns) – Ud. / Uds. command No se sienten. No se acuesten. No se lo pongan. No me hable. No me lo haga. No me lo den. RID Rule: Reflexive before Direct Indirect before Direct
