MITIGATING PEDESTRIAN COLLISIONS:utilizing training and educationt.j. thorn, oHSTDirector of safety
Mitigating pedestrian collisions • Establish procedures • You cannot train/educate without procedures • Training • New hire • Refresher and (or) awareness • Education (not just for our employees)
Procedures • Pedestrian-related interactions should be included in operations procedures (e.g. part of Operator handbook) • Or created based upon experience • Metro created and issued a Mandatory Turn Procedure • Whatever the procedure or policy is for pedestrians, it should be documented and enforced
Training • Ensure pedestrian-vehicle interaction is fully integrated into new operator training • Metro utilizes TSI training for new operators • Pedestrian-vehicle interaction awareness is reinforced many times in Metro training manual • Provide experience-based refresher or awareness training • Safety Specialist utilizes video of actual incidents • Excellent tool for awareness and refresher
Education • Not only operators • Customers are educated via communication, including: • Website • Posted signage (on board and service locations) • Safety outreach events
Wrap-up • Cannot rely on operators’ experience alone • Need for established policies and procedures • Pedestrian interaction must be fully integrated into new operator and refresher training • Our passengers must be educated for their own safety
