How do the elderly live in Amsterdam? • Policies on behalf of the City of Amsterdam • Senior Housing • The housing situation is problematic in Amsterdam, not only because of the housing shortage, but mainly because of all the rules from the municipality. Eg. income requirements for living areas • And these rules change once annually. Eg. the admission policy for living areas What has changed? • Many senior homes are being closed • Older people (must) remain longer living at home • Lack of elderly care due to shortages in subsidies make it more expensive • Social isolation levels increase
Lifespan-Resistant Housing What does that mean? New housing and construction must meet the following requirements: • All flooring level, ground floor or elevator; • Wide doors, • No thresholds, • High-rise toilet • Within walking distance to shops, healthcare institutions and public transport In existing buildings these requirements must be accommodated as much as possible, often through subsidies, eg. adding a stairlift
