  3. TONE AND STYLE 1. Descriptions must be fair and honest - objective 2. Avoid using highly charged language and emotional buzzwords 3. Do not use value statements 4. Removing personal pronouns is appropriate for some reports 5. A more subjective stance is appropriate for some reports

  4. PERCISION AND CLARITY 1. Academic writing is more precise and formal than speech 2. Avoid colloquialisms or speech-isms 3. Avoid non-words – or words that do not need to be included 4. Use adverbs with caution

  5. REDUCING BIAS 1. Use person-first language 2. Do not portray people as labels or categories 3. Refer to people who have a specific condition; do not refer to conditions as if they were people 4. Do not use the term ‘normal’ when referring to people 5. Writing must be gender neutral

  6. 6. Refer to sexual orientation only when it is relevant 7. A person who is … not a category 8. Race and ethnicity often used interchangeably

  7. LENGTH AND CLARITY 1. Long enough to say what needs to be said 2. Short enough so as not to bore or confuse the reader 3. Clarity is often enhanced by using as few words as possible 4. Another person should be able to read your report and replicate what you did. 5. Clarity is enhanced by organization 6. Organization is enhanced by headings and subheadings
