In 1494, France invaded Italy. The French Kings were fascinated by Italian architecture, art, and fashion.
In the early 1500’s, King François I arranged for Italian artists to work for him in France. He was the first person outside of Italy to collect Italian art and statues. François also built the Louvre, a palace on the banks of the Seine River in Paris.
He also brought Leonardo da Vinci to France as his “Painter, Engineer, and King’s Architect.” He encouraged French writers to copy the writing style of the Italian writers.
