  1. PROPITIATION Man is a sinner, Rom 3 tells us all have sinned and fall short. Man is in need of propitiation, that which satisfies God as an atonement for sin!

  2. Propitiation/Atonement • Aaron entered the Holy of Hollies once a year. He had to have blood to make atonement for the sins of the people. He would take the blood and sprinkle it on the cover (atonement cover) which was part of the Ark of the covenant between the two cherubim. This blood covered the cover, and was a picture of Christ’s blood that would cover our sins. It took innocent blood to pay for sins.

  3. GOD IS HOLY • Because God is Holy, and Righteous, sin is intolerable to Him. Sin requires a visit from Gods wrath. Gods Justice demands the soul that sins will die. But at the same time God is merciful, and loving. Gods Mercy motivated by love says “I’ll Pay that price” • Propitiation is like atonement it covers our sins with the shed blood of Jesus. This is Gods satisfaction for our sins. It satisfies his justice, and saves man his creation.

  4. PROPITIATION • Romans 3:25 God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement (Propitiation) through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he has left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— • Christ suffered the punishment required by God’s Justice for our sins. We are cleansed by his blood, an atonement for our sins.

  5. PROPITIATION • Hebrews 2:17 • For this reason he had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement (propitiation) for the sins of the people.

  6. The covering of sins • The blood of Christ on the cross, flows both directions. That is, it is what really brought about forgiveness for all the faithful we read about in the old testament, as well as all of us this side of the cross. His blood is the only remedy for sin no matter when you lived.

  7. PROPITIATION • 1 John 2:2 • He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. • The atoning sacrifice, he paid the price for our sins, thus satisfied, appeased Gods wrath, and God’s Holiness is protected.

  8. PROPITIATION • 1 John 4:10 • This is Love; not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

  9. MANS NEED PROPITIATION • To realize that propitiation is needed because of God’s righteous judgment against sin. • Rom 11:22 & 23 • Consider therefore the kindness and sternness of God: sternness to those who fell, but kindness to you, provided that you continue in his kindness. Otherwise you also will be cut off.

  10. GODS WRATH • The wrath of God stresses the seriousness of sin. • Where there is sin, there is wrath. • We serve the same God we see in the old testament. The God of wrath, Justice, Mercy, and Love. He has not changed not one iota! He is the same, and has all of these attributes all the time. He is not some times love and sometimes something else, he is always all of them.

  11. GOD’S WRATH • God’s wrath is real! • 1 Cor 10:5-11 Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered over the desert. Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in pagan revelry.

  12. GODS WRATH • 1 Cor 10:5-11 • WE should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did- and were killed by snakes. And do not grumble, as some of them did- and were killed by the destroying angel These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come.

  13. THE WRATH OF GOD • Heb 10:30-31 • For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” and again “The Lord will judge his people.” It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. • Heb12:29 • By faith the people passed through the Red Sea as on dry land; but when the Egyptians tried to do so, they were drowned.

  14. THE WRATH OF GOD • The wrath of God is righteous: • Rom 1:18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness. • Rom 2:1-16 You therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth.

  15. THE WRATH OF GOD • Rom 2:1-16 So when you, a mere man, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things ,do you think you will escape God’s judgment? Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, tolerance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness leads you toward repentance? But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed.

  16. THE WRATH OF GOD • God “will give to each person according to what he has done.” To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality he will give eternal life. But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger. There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile; but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.

  17. THE WRATH OF GOD • Rom 2:1-16 but God does not show favoritism. All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous. (In deed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law,

  18. THE WRATH OF GOD • Rom 2:1-16 since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.) This will take place on the day when God will judge men’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.

  19. NO SECOND CHANCE • Don’t you be fooled into believing you will get a second chance in some Millennium theory, or in some purgatory place where you can earn a second chance at salvation. It is not true! • Satan would have you put off your salvation for some future time, don’t be fooled, Now is the time in this life only!

  20. THE WRATH OF GOD • To think seriously of propitiation one must first think seriously of God’s wrath: • God, a moral being, directs his righteous indignation towards wrongdoing in ANY FORM. • John 3:36 • Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on him.

  21. THE WRATH OF GOD • Ephesians 5:6 • Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. • Colossians 3: 5&6 • Put to death, therefore, what ever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.

  22. THE WRATH OF GOD • Rom 2:5 • But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day ofGod’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. • Rom 3:5 But if our unrighteousness brings out God’s righteousness more clearly, what shall we say? That God is unjust in bringing his wrath on us (I am using a human argument.)

  23. THE WRATH OF GOD • Rom 5:9 • Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! • 1 Thes 1:10 • and to wait for his son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead – Jesus who rescues us from the coming wrath.

  24. THE WRATH OF GOD • 1 Thes 2:16 • in their effort to keep us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they may be saved. In this way they always heap up their sins to the limit. The wrath of God has come upon them at last. • God’s wrath is not fitful anger, but rather a strong settled opposition to all that is wicked, sinful and false.

  25. WRATH MOTIVATED BY LOVE • God’s wrath is directed by his justice which protects his HOLINESS. His wrathis motivated by Love, which would rather men be brought to repentance. • 1 Tim 2:3&4 • This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.

  26. PROPITIATION • God’s wrath can be averted by God’s own provision of “Propitiation.” • Propitiation is the means provided to save mankind from “The Wrath To Come”. • Removal of wrath is not due to a sinner’s offering sufficient to buy off God. • Propitiation has no element of the paganistic concept of “bribing the gods”

  27. PROPITIATION • God set forth Jesus Christ to be a propitiation: • Rom 3:21-26 But now a righteousness from God apart from law, has been made known, to which the law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

  28. MANS NEED PROPITIATION • Rom 3:21-26 God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished- he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.

  29. PROPITIATION • All sinners are under the terrifying consequences of the wrath of God, BUT Christ Jesus suffered the WRATH OF GOD IN THE SINNER’S STEAD: • Gal 2:20 • I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

  30. PROPITIATION • 2 Cor 5:21 • God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that “IN HIM” we might become the righteousness of God. • 1 Pet 2:24 • He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.

  31. PROPITIATION • Jesus paid the price for our sins, He is the satisfaction for God’s wrath, and satisfied the demands of God’s justice. “The soul that sins shall die” Jesus satisfied the law of sin and death. He has set us free from the law of sin and death, and set us free from the penalty for sin. Because of all this RECONCILLIATION HAS BEEN MADE, between man, the offender, and God the Offended.

  32. What does this all mean? • God is able to forgive sins while also maintaining his righteousness. • God was able to reckon penitent sinners righteous through the obedience of faith and still be just. • God provided the means, IN CHRIST whereby sinners may be justified, reconciled, and redeemed; coming into his presence without fear of the consuming wrath.

  33. THE CROSS OF CHRIST • The cross of Christ on the surface seems to be a simple act of his taking my place and serving my sentence of death. • BUT the cross of Christ is multi facetted like a diamond. I understand a diamond has 32 cuts, and some more. The cross can be viewed from any facet to consider all that Christ accomplished. His and ONLY HIS SACRIFICE is all sufficient to save us from our sins.
