4. Practical tools for speeding-up the PhD process

Prof. Jerzy Cieślik

Kozminski University

practical tools what they are and are not
Practical tools – what they are and are not?
  • Focusing on the identification of the VIABLE PhD subject
  • Making the PHD preparation process more efficient
  • Speeding up the PhD process
  • Identifying smart ways and efficient practices

But not substitutes for:

  • Regular contacts with yourPhD supervisor
  • Accumulating knowledge in the particular research field
  • Mastering the research methods relevant for your subject
  • Participating in the PhD study program
practical tools and methods
Practicaltools and methods
  • PositioningyourPhD on the Map of (Management) Science
    • JEL classification
    • ABS UK Journal Classification
  • Definingyourcorelevel and immediate upperlevel
  • 5 x 5 matrics for research field mapping (Global and Polish)
  • Core/upperlevel „state of theart” preview
  • Coreliterature review template
  • Your first publishedacademic paper
  • PhD business plan template
  • PhDreadinesschecklist
tool 1 positioning your phd on the map of management science
Tool 1.Positioning yourPhD on the Map of (Management) Science
  • Why important?
  • Journal of Literature Classification http://www.aeaweb.org/jel/guide/jel.php
    • Usefull for economics, less for management
  • Association of Business Schools Journal list (see Course website)
    • One of several academic journal rankings
    • Focus on Management Science
    • 22 subject fields
    • List of high quality academic journals – not trade journals
tasks
Tasks
  • Positioning your PHD on the Map of Science – next Workshop individual presentations (16.11.2013)
  • The 5 X 5 matrics: Global and Polish perspective
  • State of the art preview
    • Select very limited number of „state of the art” papers (1-3) and invest in thorough understanding of the content
process of selecting viable idea
Process of selecting viable idea

Launching new business

Writing PhD thesis

Most often PhD comes from personal interest or working environment

Practically nonexistent except „franchised” PHD

Iteration very seldom and largely neglected

Intuition needed in smart data collection

Major weakness among Polish PhD students

  • Inside out
  • Outside in
  • Iteration between inside out and outside in
  • Intuitive search process – entrepreneurial alertness
  • Organized search (brainstorming, focus groups, international outside in)
innovativeness and success
Innovativeness and success

Launching new business

Writing PhD thesis

PhDs based on incremental innovation only

Uniquenes not required

Forget about international novelty, meeting basic country level sufficient, „new to me” not sufficient

E.g. addressing different segments of the population or additional variables

Good data sources

Marketing skills during PHD Colloquium

  • Radical innovation extremely rare
  • Minor incremental novelty sufficient
  • Novelty at the international, country and firm level
  • Novelty regarding
    • Product
    • Process
    • Organization
    • Marketing
how novel your phd thesis must be
Hownovelyour PHD thesismust be?

USTAWA z dnia 14 marca 2003 r. o stopniach naukowych i tytule naukowym

  • oryginalne rozwiązanie problemu naukowego

oraz

  • wykazywać ogólną wiedzę teoretyczną kandydata w danej dyscyplinie naukowej

oraz

  • umiejętność samodzielnego prowadzenia pracy naukowej.

Problem naukowy, problem badawczy (research problem) – problem intelektualny wymagający rozwiązania w postaci badań naukowych

Feasibility test

viable phd subject key characteristics
Viable PhD subject: Key characteristics
  • Personal interest – yes, but as an addition to other strong points
  • Avoid grand themes, be more specific
  • Niche subjects are OK, particularly if combined with some relevance within local environment
  • Relevance to managers and policymakers – would be nice but you need do write and defend PhD thesis
  • Identify subjects vividly debated in the peer reviewed top international journals. The more papers, research projects and conferences on a given subject, the better
  • Avoid subjects not dealt extensively in the current scientific literature
  • Check availability of empirical data. This is key criterion on subject viability
tool 2 a scientific market review the 5 x 5 matric global perspective
Tool 2 a: Scientific Market review : The 5 X 5 matric – Global perspective
  • Identify 5 top peer refereed academic journals focusing on your specific subject
  • Identify 5 top internationally recognized books or collective works on your specific subject
  • Identify 5 most renowned professors in your narrow field („gurus”) and theiraffiliations (universities, researchcenters)
  • Identify 5 top regular international academic conferences covering your subject
  • Identify 5 recentlywritten PHD thesesin Poland and worldwide close to yoursubjecthttp://www.dart-europe.eu
tool 2 b scientific market review the 5 x 5 matric polish perspective
Tool 2 b: Scientific Market review : The 5 X 5 matric – Polishperspective
  • Identify 5 Polish academic journals publishing papers on your subject http://www.nauka.gov.pl/lista-czasopism-punktowanych/lista-czasopism-punktowanych.html
  • Identify 5 top Polish academic books on your subject
  • Identify 5 Polish researchersspecializingin your narrow field („gurus”) and their affiliations (universities, research centers)http://www.opi.org.pl/Nauka-polska.html
  • Identify 5 recent Polish academic conferences covering your subject
  • Identify 5 recent research projects, PHD theses and habilitations close to your subject. Nauka Polska Databasehttp://www.opi.org.pl/Nauka-polska.html
