  1. How to Analyze Art End of Semester Project Art with Power

  2. Feldman’s Model of Criticism • Describe • Analyze • Interpret • Judge This is how we talk about art

  3. Step 1: Describe • We see a night sky • Lots of brush strokes • A church • A person • Possibly in the countryside

  4. Step 2: Analyze • Lots of brush strokes create rhythm and movement • Mostly cold colors are used • Many different colors are layered to create value • It’s in the expressionistic style

  5. Step 3: Interpret • Cold colors could mean sadness • The one person next to the giant church gives us the impression of loneliness • The church also feels very imposing and scary • Maybe Van Gogh is afraid of church or loneliness

  6. Step 4: Judgement • I think the artist does a good job of creating anxiety with brush strokes and color and proportion • I enjoy that there is a person in the picture to give us a more concrete subject

  7. Now you! • Get out a piece of paper. • We will be working together to write about art. • Follow along with the Feldman’s Model to correctly talk about art

  8. Step 1: Describe • What is the subject? • What is the background? • What colors are being used?

  9. Step 2: Analyze • How do the two colors relate? • What style is this in? • How does the artist use emphasis? What sticks out and how?

  10. Step 3: Interpret • Why is the dog wearing a tie? • What does the style of art mean? (Stylized)

  11. Step 4: Judgement • Was the artist successful using emphasis? • Do you like what the painting is saying? Did the artist do a good job of communicating his idea?
