  7. About Healthy People • Provides science-based, 10 year national objectives for improving the health of all Americans • Serves as the foundation for prevention efforts across the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). • Supports HHS efforts to create a healthier Nation

Mission of Healthy People 2020 • Identify nationwide health improvement priorities. • Increase public awareness and understanding of the determinants of health, disease, and disability. • Provide measurable objectives and goals that are applicable at the national, State, and local levels. • Engage multiple sectors to take actions to strengthen policies and improve practices. • Identify critical research, evaluation, and data collection needs.

Healthy People 2020 • Contains 42 topic areas • 600 objectives which encompass 1,200 measures • A smaller set of Healthy People 2020 objectives, called Leading Health Indicators, has been selected to communicate high-priority health issues • The process of selecting the Leading Health Indicators (LHIs) was completed by approximately 50 members across the HHS and other Federal departments

Healthy People 2020 Leading Health indicators: • Access to health services • Clinical preventive services (includes immunizations and infectious diseases) • Environmental health • Injury and violence • Maternal, infant, and child health • Mental health • Nutrition, physical activity, and obesity • Oral health • Reproductive and sexual health (includes STDS) • Social determinants • Substance abuse • Tobacco

  12. Health Disparities • Health disparities refer to differences between groups of people. These differences can affect how frequently a disease affects a group, how many people get sick, or how often the disease causes death. • Many different populations are affected by disparities. These include: • Racial and ethnic minorities • Residents of rural areas • Women, children, the elderly • Persons with disabilities

HP 2020 Project • Secretary Sebelius has hired you to help develop the new plan. • You are a public health educator: • Choose one of the 42 topic areas (see handout) • Decide why this topicis a serious public health issue to you and our nation • Choose one of the objective under the topic to focus on • Establish a campaign (PSA) around this objective that can hopefully change the US life expectancy number in 2020
