  4. CCMS Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) • 32/33 Subgroups made their Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) under the No Child Left Behind Law • Due to this fact we are a Year 6 - Program Improvement School last year. • Measures are being taken to continue growth.

  5. Culver City Middle School Vision Statement The vision of Culver City Middle School is to prepare our students to become productive, life-long learners and responsible citizens. We will • Close achievement gap by bringing all significant subgroups to 800 or above; • Prepare students so they are proficient across curriculum; • Integrate arts into the core curriculum; • Provide diverse after-school programming; • Provide a safe, welcoming, respectful, and encouraging culture for all stakeholders; • Welcome parent/community involvement.

Culver City Middle School Mission Statement The mission of Culver City Middle School, a culturally diverse and collaborative learning community, is to ensure that all students are provided a rigorous education program. We seek to foster a positive work ethic, integrity, respect, and a passion for learning while striving to create a technologically innovative classroom experience.

Culver City Middle SchoolProgram • Each grade level has three teams (language arts, social studies, math, science teachers). • Students are randomly assigned to a team. • Teachers meet weekly to: plan cross-curricular/interdisciplinary units; plan team reward activities and field trips; discuss intervention and/or enrichment activities;meet with parents • Block Scheduling – School day is 8:20am-2:20pm

  8. Language ArtsCathi Green-Bratton, Annie Zarrinpar, Dan Grime Provides a balanced, unified program of instruction in language, reading, literature, composition and communication. Engages the students in a variety of essential skills which include listening, speaking, writing and critical thinking. Use language effectively in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Read a variety of literature, including fiction, non-fiction, short stories, plays and poetry. Learn to utilize correct spelling, grammar and vocabulary.

  9. Rick Garcia, Debbie Corwin, David Ross World History and Geography Ancient Civilizations Prehistory to 500 A.D. Objective • To expand students knowledge of Ancient Western and Non-Western Civilizations using the California State Content Standards as a guide. • Also offered in Spanish as a continuation of our Spanish Immersion Program and is also available to Native Speakers

  11. Mathematics Concepts and Skills Based on the California State Frameworks and Content Standards, the 6th grade math course offers a balanced curriculum. Both basic skills and problem-solving are emphasized.

  12. Math Students will be tested in June at elementary schools and will be placed in either regular or advanced sixth grade math. This test ALONE will determine their placement.

  15. “0” Period PE • Begins every day at 7:30am-8:15am (school day begins at 8:20am-2:20pm) • Satisfies number of PE minutes required by state • Eligible for ANY student who takes an “academic elective” – Spanish Immersion, Japanese, Immersion, Math Builders, ALD • Allows those students to experience a “traditional” Arts Elective

Physical EducationJason Vermillion, Karen Wyatt • The 6th grade level is designed to provide students with appropriate introductory P.E. skills including: the acquisition of basic skills for court games; running games; rhythmic activities; individual and team sports; and physical conditioning. • Special emphasis is placed on basic ball handling skills along with movement exploration activities, and modified games.

  17. Special Education Special Education offers a full range of services: • Learning Center • Speech and language • Adaptive PE • Specialized Academic Instruction • Services for our severely handicapped population Students with a current IEP will automatically receive appropriate services.

ELD MISSION STATEMENT The mission of Culver City Unified School District is to prepare its English Learners to: • develop a positive self-concept and cross-cultural understanding • meet requirements for redesignation as Fluent English Proficient • graduate from high school ready to pursue careers or further education

CCMS Scholars Program • Classes offered in English Language Arts • Admittance based on 2013 CST Scores and grades • Applications will be available in elementary school offices as well as CCMS Website • The deadline to apply to the CCMS Scholars Program is May 3, 2013. • Students will learn of their course placement status at registration in August

  23. Student Recognition Student of the Month Each month the student’s first period teacher chooses a Student of the Month. The categories change monthly. The Students of the Month are honored at a special luncheon. Their certificates and pictures are displayed outside of the main office. Scholarship League Students who have a 3.0 GPA and no N’s or U’s on any report card receive a certificate and are honored at special events throughout the year. Principal’s Honor Roll Students who have a 3.75 GPA and no N’s or U’s on any report card receive a certificate and are honored at special events throughout the year. Caught You Being Good Students receive tickets for good citizenship/Effort. Weekly drawings are held where students receive prizes such as gift certificates, early to lunch passes, lunch with the principal.

  24. Student Council Most of the student activities are planned by Student Council. Elected members come from the homerooms. Any student who is interested may be a volunteer Student Council member whether or not elected from homerooms. • Organize and plan dances • Assist with lunchtime activities • Plan Spirit Week • Meet weekly with officers and homeroom representatives

  25. GATE The GATE program at Culver City Middle School provides enrichment and learning opportunities for our GATE students. The program includes: • Enrichment activities for 2 hours weekly during SSR per. • Our Panther Partners After School Programs provide excellent opportunities for GATE student enrichment, including: Chess & Games Club and others • GATE Parent Advisory Opportunities • Field Trips such as CIMI and Astrocamp • GATE Lunches • Differentiated Instruction in CORE classes

  26. The Culver City Police Department provides one uniformed officer for the Culver City Unified School District. Officer Casillas works with our security, the administration, the teachers, the parents and the students to ensure the safety of all of our schools. SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICERS

Culver City Youth Health Center The Culver City Youth Health Center is a collaborative effort between Culver City Unified School District, Los Angeles Child Development Center, and Venice Family Health Clinic. Parents must complete a registration form before a student can be seen. Confidential services may not require parental consent. Services include: • General Health Care for adolescences and youth (Donations gladly accepted for all services) • Immunizations for all adolescence and youth • Sports Physical - $25 Donation (Recommended) • Reproductive Health Care • Support and Counseling for Mental Health Concerns • Health Education • Health insurance application assistance for the uninsured

Culver City Youth Health Center • All children and adolescents seeking medical services must: Live in Culver City or attend Culver City Schools Hours of OperationDoctors are available For Appointments Call: M 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Phone: Cell (310) 872-6652 W 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. School: 310 842 4200 x3510 Mental Health Social Workers are available everyday except Tuesdays. Individual and group counseling sessions. Nurses office open daily 7:45 am-3:30 pm for school health concerns.

  30. LIBRARY • The library is open from 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. • The following services are provided: • Check out library books • Check out textbooks • Do research, using reference books or computers • Do homework or study • Read • Use technology

Food Services • Food services provides breakfast and lunch for our students. • Breakfast is served daily. • Lunch provides a variety of tasty and healthy treats, including pizza, burgers, chicken sandwiches, and entries provided by our CCUSD food services staff • Students must take three meal components and one of those MUST be ½ cup fruit or vegetable. • e-funds accepts pre-payments on-line for cafeteria account. • Student account activity can be monitored by visiting the Food Service web page at www.culvercafe.org

  33. Teen Center LOCATION: VETS Park HOURS: Monday - Friday, 2 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. MEMBERSHIP: $50 per semester. Open to all residents of Culver City and students who attend CCMS on permit.   34. School Site Council The School Site Council has developed a site plan to enhance the learning opportunities for the students at Culver City Middle School. Categorical funds from the State of California are specifically earmarked to support the site plan. The council meets on the third Thursday of every month at 5:30 p.m.

  35. PTSA The PTSA is an active group of parents, teachers and students who support Culver City Middle School in many ways. They give freely of their time to support State and National PTA programs. They also help raise money for the CCMS staff and students. Some of their services include: Supplementary funds for all content and elective areas Magazine Drive Book Fair Field Trips/Assemblies Team Activities Staff breakfast/lunches Honorary Service Awards AND...

  36. Student StoreVolunteers The Student Store is staffed totally by parent volunteers. The Student Store sells school supplies, PE clothes, and treats. Depending on the availability of parents, the store is open several days a week during lunch and after school. If you have free time, please join us.

PANTHER PARTNERS Panther Partners raises money for after-school programs at CCMS • arts – realistic drawing, comedy improvisation, show choir, mural painting, digital photo & Photoshop, cake decorating, AVPA, strings ensemble, handbells • academics – Chess & Games Club, Mock Trial, MESA science engineering class, Math Counts, Lego Robotics, GATE, AVID • athletics – Football, Softball, Baseball, Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer, Cross Country, Lacrosse, 5K training, Fitness Center • Campus beautification, murals, library, meet & greet garden clean up day date • Refurbish the back gym flooring, paint and replace ceiling • Technology upgrades (WiFi, iPad carts, LCDs, new computer lab for Galileo testing) • Parent outreach and yahoo group culvercitymiddleschool-subscribe@yahoogroups.com • Jog-a-thon in March raises $31,000 • Technology Drive in Fall raises $10,000 • Register your grocery cards escrip.com (Vons/Pavilions) Ralphs.com raises $4,000 • Grant writing • We need new parents to volunteer to be on the Jog-a-thon committee and we need a secretary.
