Katie Coroon

16-year-old Katie Coroon from Dyce Academy volunteers with Aberdeenshire Libraries, raising funds to volunteer in Zambia with the Book Bus Foundation. Her journey started with DofE Bronze and Saltire Award, where she became an ICT Mentor Volunteer. Through her training and experiences, she has helped learners with various challenges, changing her perceptions of older people. Katie recommends volunteering and is currently training volunteers to be ICT mentors in other library branches while continuing to assist learners and engage in library activities.

  2. About myself • 16 years old • Dyce Academy -English -Modern Studies -History -Geography -Hospitality • Volunteered with Aberdeenshire libraries for one year • Currently raising funds to volunteer in Zambia with the Book Bus Foundation

  3. How I got started • DofE Bronze • Saltire Award

  4. ICT Mentor Volunteering with Aberdeenshire Libraries • My Mum co-ordinates the project • Heard positive things about the project • Wanted to get involved

  5. Training • 4 hours of training • Learning styles • Administration element • Scenarios • Role play

  6. First volunteering experience • Met with volunteer along with co-ordinator • Learner also accompanied by carer as she suffered a brain injury • Nervous but eager to get started (both volunteer and learner) • Excited to help someone who needed support

  7. My learner • Not as old as I expected • Suffered a brain injury and was ill • Forgotten how to use a computer • Poor memory • Communication problems to begin

  8. Achievements with Learner • Started to use E-mail again • Memory started to improve • Speech improved

  9. Perceptions of older people • Not able to learn new things • Wary of young people – negative view • Not interested in any hobbies • Grumpy • Set in their ways

  10. Never judge a book by its cover… • Never assume that just because someone is older they can’t learn new things • They have many hobbies such as volunteering • Very appreciative • Have things in common with every learner I supported

  11. My experience • Volunteering is very fulfilling • Recommend volunteering to anyone who enjoys helping others • My perceptions of older people have been changed - Interested in technology - Busy people - Interesting things to share each lesson
