  2. union something that is made one : something formed by a combining or coalition of parts or members

  3. justice the quality of being just, impartial, or fair

  4. tranquility the quality or state of being tranquil

  5. defense an argument in support

  6. welfare the state of doing well especially in relation to happiness, well-being, or success

  7. liberty the condition of those who are free and independent

  8. posterity the line of individuals descended from one ancestor

  9. constitution the basic beliefs and laws of a nation, state, or social group that establish the powers and duties of the government and guarantee certain rights to the people in it

  10. We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

  11. Activity • Divide into eight groups to perform a cumulative choral reading of the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution. The first group read to the first comma, the second group read to the next comma, and so on. Continue adding voices/phrases until the whole class is reading the Preamble

  12. We the People of the United States,

  13. in Order to form a more perfect Union,

  14. establish Justice,

  15. insure domestic Tranquility,

  16. provide for the common defense,

  17. promote the general Welfare,

  18. and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity,
