  1. Parenting with Purpose

  2. “But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit.” Jeremiah 17:7-8

  3. I Peter 2:4 As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, 5 you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame . . .” 9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

  4. Review of Symbolism of the Tabernacle - Exodus 32 • Commitment- Entrance to the Courtyard • Sacrifice - Altar of Burnt offerings • Humility, confession, forgiveness - Wash basin • Truth & Spirit- Golden Lampstand • Rejoicing in Jesus, the Bread of Life- Table of Showbread • Prayer - Altar of Incense • Being one with God- Ark of Covenant / Testimony

  5. Review from last week • God has designed what our relationships should look like. • Jesus, our High Priest, has prepared the way to the throne of the Father for us. • The Lord becomes the center of our relationships, our marriage, our home, our church. As we grow closer to Him, our relationships will deepen. His goal is that we become united as one with Him. • Parents must protect the presence of God in their homes and families.

  6. Hebrews 9:1-5 Now even the first covenant had regulations for worship and an earthly place of holiness. 2 For a tent was prepared, the first section, in which were the lampstand and the table and the bread of the Presence. It is called the Holy Place. 3 Behind the second curtain was a second section called the Most Holy Place, 4 having the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, in which was a golden urn holding the manna, and Aaron's staff that budded, and the tablets of the covenant. 5 Above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. . .

  7. Equipped with Tools to Parent Holy Calling - budded staff Word of God - commandments / testimony God’s Provision - manna

  8. Deuteronomy 6:4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

  9. I Corinthians 6:17 But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. . . . 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

  10. How is the Holy Spirit a model / assistant for parents? • Is very present, so parents should also be very present in their kids’ lives. • Shines light into darkness, truth into confusion and secrets, but without condemnation. (Jn. 16:13) • Provides intercession for reconciliation, so parents should also pray for their children’s hearts and characters to be turned/restored to God (Romans 8:26). • Gently guides with our best interest in mind, pointing out pitfalls, but is not demanding. • Places great worth and value on each child of God. • Provides hope for the future. • Brings us to a place of constant reliance on God, listening to God, being humbled by God. • Helps us produce fruit (love, joy, peace, faithfulness, gentleness, kindess, self-control, etc.) • Is a comfort in times of distress, a friend who is always there.

  11. Deuteronomy 8:3 And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.

  12. How is Jesus a model / assistant for parents? • He delivered me because he delighted in me. (Psalm 18:19) • Provides everything we need by giving up himself for us. • Acts as our high priest, providing a way to the throne of God. • Prayer, being one with the Father, was his lifeline. • Used stories and parables to teach those who were willing to listen. • Took time to look people in the eye and meet their needs. • Quoted scripture as His defense against attack. • Careful not to make quick assumptions but looks on people’s hearts. • Denounced hypocrisy; pursues relationship. (Avoids shallow obedience) • Equipped his followers to take the Gospel to the world after he left. • Demonstrated God in human form.

  13. Digging Deeper #1 • What is a parent’s job? • What should be a parent’s #1 priority? • What do kids need most from their parents?

  14. Digging Deeper #2 • How can parents best develop a child’s character? • How can those without children at home assist parents in this process?

  15. Digging Deeper #3 • How have your parents affected your own parenting style? • How have your parents affected your views of God? • What does this teach us about those who are parenting children right now?

  16. Digging Deeper #4 • How do the responsibilities and roles of parenting change over time? • What are some joys and struggles at the various stages of parenting?

  17. Ephesians 3 14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, 16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. 20 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
