Our goals as mentors • To challenge you to think about potential weaknesses in your thesis • We won’t purposefully be confrontational, but will ask you to address any holes or problems that may also be raised by your “real” committee if not corrected early • Criticism not to be taken personally; offered in the spirit of improving your final results • Prepare you to practice “defending” your ideas in a public forum • Offer candid advice and suggestions regarding all facets of research • The “closed” nature of this workshop allows all of us to discuss things in confidentiality • “What is said in Jamaica, stays in Jamaica!”

Timing of Presentation • Your presentation time should be 30 minutes, followed by 15 minutes of questions • A “5 minutes left” sign will be presented to you after 25 minutes into your talk • If you go much over the time limit, we may ask you to stop so that we can move into the question period • If we get off-schedule, we will adjust things to give you a full 45-minute slot
