Data Democracy • CEOS encourages members to share capability to the users in developing countries • Accessing datasets, software packages, dissemination models, and capacity building. • One of the 2009 CEOS’ Priorities • Plan/Goal • Continue to support Data Democracy activities • Expanding the program to developing countries in Asia, especially in the areas of software/tools and capacity building. • A seminar to introduce Data Democracy Program to Asian members • Coordinating and seeking for support from member agencies and Working Groups The 23rd CEOS Plenary I Phuket, Thailand I 3-5 November 2009

  9. 2009 Deliverables: Data Access • Free data access for the African Monitoring of Environment for Sustainable Development (AMESD) Project • Free/open access for CBERS (from INPE’s ground station), USGS LANDSAT, and NASA-instrument data • Consolidation of the CBERS for Africa initiative in Aswan (Egypt) and Maspalomas (Canary Islands, Spain) • Free data access for disaster management in South east Asia (supported by Sentinel Asia) The 23rd CEOS Plenary I Phuket, Thailand I 3-5 November 2009

Web-Enabled Imagery – Download Statistics Total Landsat Scenes Delivered Since October 1, 2008 • Over 2.4 million images available today • Seven fold increase in scientific and educational users • Data delivered to 180 countries • User shift to multi-year scenes at same location • Highly favorable user response • Exceeded 1 Million scenes delivered on August 16, 2009 Daily Average = 3,125 scenes of web-enabled data delivered Daily Average = 53 scenes for best year of sales (2001) Cumulative Scenes Delivered (Web-enabled) Cumulative Scenes Delivered (Sales) 10

  12. 2009 Deliverables: Software Package • A Data Democracy disc (Fundisa Disc) to South African and South African Development Community (SADC) Universities with up-to-date geospatial raster and vector data and open source software tools • An Open Source GIS software developed by South Africa for South East Asia • Free GIS and Valued Added Data software developed by Brazil • Data democracy Program will also offer some training courses to facilitate users in using the software packages.   13. 2009 Deliverables: Capacity Building • A Training Program on the utilisation of the data for the African Monitoring of Environment for Sustainable Development (AMESD) Project • A Training Program for Data Democracy disc (Fundisa Disc) to South African and South African Development Community (SADC) Universities • A GIS training course packaged with open source software for use at secondary school level in South Africa • Training material and training programs (face to face and e-learning) for African end-users of CBERS images. • A plan for training program in June 2010 for users in South East Asia on Data Access tools and Natural Disaster Management. Coordination with GEO • Proposals to GEO • Responded to GEO CFP for EO for Decision Support Projects • A Concept Proposal was submitted on July 3 • Full proposal to be submitted in January 2010 • Data Democracy Program is proposed as a new task in a current GEO WP (July 3) • Being considered for approval in GEO VI Plenary
