  1. Group: Crop-livestock

  2. Conceptual Framework • Use the flip chart

  3. Crop-livestock interactions for Intensive systems

  4. What combination of technologies would potentially fit in this system (bearing constraints in mind)? • Dual purpose legume crops and tree/shrubs for ruminant and non-ruminant animals • Rapid appraisal of available varieties /species • Participatory selection of available varieties/species for market, disease/drought resistance, soil improvement, compatibility with crops • Participatory testing at plot and landscape levels • Link to market • Capacity building on livestock feed utilization • Utilization of crop residues • Identify post-harvesting technologies (PHT) for both crops and livestock (food and feed safety)

  5. What tangible research activities should we undertake to test if our combination fits this system? NOW?(to be in the field) • Draft a protocol for implementation • Find out if seed/planting materials are available • Identify communities to work with • What is already going on/ leverage with on-going projects (e.g. ILRI work in Mvomero),focus feed quality improvement that has implication on the manure quality/management

  6. Who should be part of the research team? • NARs, • SARI (Dr. Matowo), Ari-Hombolo (Elirehema), LRC (Dr. Mushi), LRC-Mpwapwa LRC (?) • GART (Dr. Muliyokela), ZARI (Dr. Mwale) • DAS (Dr. Mtukes), • University: SUA, University of Zambia, LUANAR • CG-Centers (ILRI, ICRAF, IITA)

  7. Who could we partner with? • Local government authorities • Farmer organization societies (FOS)

  8. What combination of technologies would potentially fit in this system (bearing constraints in mind)? • Village Level Poultry and Crop Production for Meat and Eggs • Technologies for feeding and managing poultry • Technologies for improving human nutrition • Marketing technologies • Crop production of feeds

  9. What tangible research activities should we undertake to test if our combination fits this system? NOW?(to be in the field) • Characterize poultry and crop/shrub production activities • Identify entry points where research • Identify PHT for improvement of nutrition market and food security (food and feed safety) • Design research proposal and implementation plan

  10. Who should be part of the research team? • NARs, • SARI (Dr. Matowo), Ari-Hombolo (Elirehema), LRC (Dr. Mushi), LRC-Mpwapwa LRC (?) • GART (Dr. Muliyokela), ZARI (Dr. Mwale) • DAS (Dr. Mtukes), • University: SUA, University of Zambia, LUANAR • CG-Centers (ILRI, ICRAF, IITA)

  12. What combination of technologies would potentially fit in this system (bearing constraints in mind)? • On-farm feed formulation using locally available crops and trees/shrubs • Incorporation of non-starch grain staple food crops into livestock feeds (Cassava & sweetpotatoes) • Utilization of soil seed crops (sunflower, siemsim, cotton, soya beans • Utilization of cereal by products (Maize, sorghum, millet) • Utilization of fodder from tree/shrubs (leucaena & moringa leaf meals

  13. What tangible research activities should we undertake to test if our combination fits this system? NOW?(to be in the field) • Participatory identification of suitable tree and suitable trees and forage species. • Test forest/trees/shrub seed production and supply model • Fodder bank/reserve establishment
