  1. Sydney U3A Upper North Region A Course held at the Hornsby Central Library by Dr Ian De Mellow Slide show presentation by: Gerald Sabel CLIMATE CHANGE – Strategies and Criticisms

  2. What is confirmed • Climate change is a fact, and occurring at a seemingly accelerating rate. • What is NOT confirmed • ThatCO2isthe real culprit, or, is there some other factor? • Whether current international scientific papers said to provide valid evidencethat CO2 is the only factor causing Green House Temperature increases, are in fact, correct? • If the Policy of Carbon trading and reduction ofCO2 will provide the solution to stop, or slow, the pace of climate change? Climate Change - An Overview

  3. How will we generate power for an increasing population? What alternatives are there to Coal? • Can CO2 be buried? Is it an impossibility? • What changes are required to motor vehicles and other forms of transport? • What effect will possible rising sea levels have on the infrastructure of our major cities? • Will current practices of using plastics in packaging be able to be sustained? • Is methane even worse than CO2 and could burning methane to produce electricity be a positive or negative factor? • Will Australia suffer from prolonged drought? Consequences of a future climate change

  4. ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCES There have been many unproven claims of perpetual motion machines using:- Magnets, Gravity and more.

  5. Is to gather information from members wishing to participate, on their own thoughts regarding the problem of “climate change”, by examining the various scientific and political recommendations currently on the table, as well as from information found in this presentation, thus providing a more public point of view, perhaps unpolluted by international policies based upon yet unproven science. • How will current political thought on “climate change” effect the future of our economy, and way of life, in Australia ? The purpose of this presentation

  6. A paper presented by ParticipantsClare Dempsey; Helen Heald; Fred Kibble; Geoff Martin; George Parker: Gail Woodley-Page: Garth Coultier: Harry Heald: Elizabeth Jelks: Roger Link: Joyce Martin: Marian Plaude: Norma Scott: John Goldberg: Lesley Goldberg: Tran Jerzy: Judith Lowe: Ted Moore: Margaret Smith: Barbara Sabel: Gerald Sabel: Ian De Mellow (Leader) John L. Goldberg To read his complete paper *NB-- BEFORE PROCEEDING CLICK HERE Or, read the “Abstract” which follows

  7. suggests that steps should be taken internationally to find methods of burying and storing CO2 – • Is it possible??? Australian Policy Re-forestation of the planet is surely easier – fast growing trees would fix the CO2 and provide building materials for a growing world population . Burning timber should be made punishable by law internationally, excepting for Peasant populations

  8. A suggested method of capturing and storing CO2

  9. LIVING IN A LOW CARBON ECONOMY IN 2020 • By Ian De Mellow • Suggested reading:Scientific American - SPECIAL ISSUE • “Nuclear Energy”September 2006: “Environment” August 2007 • WEBSITE www.sciam.com Perspective Paper

  11. From the information provided by our participants, it may well be interpreted that the current theories and consequent political actions taken surely need to be re-assessed. • What do you think? • Feedback: ian.mellow@bigpond.com.au Conclusion
