  3. Millat Town Site Characteristics The site Exists in Shah Faisal Town Metropolitan of Karachi East district. The Site was selected due to helping community, availability of representative 3 segments and co-operative farmers. The Sewerage network in Community section consists of an open drain and an underground sewerage line parallel to each other. The wastewater from Azeempura, Green Town, A proportion of Shah Faisal Colony and Millat Town confluences in this sewerage network. The Water is Collected in Natural Earthen pounding after emitting from drain. This water is then used for Irrigation to Farmer’s fields by gravity or by lifting through pumps.

  4. Problems of Area • Drain is open to atmosphere and passes from just front of home doors. • There is no system of solid waste collection in area. • From the pound the drain water is directly used for irrigation which is a health risk for water users and consumers of produce.

  5. Action Areas: • The resources are meager therefore work is concentrated in three segments covering three action areas: • o First Segment • o Second Segment • o Third segment

  7. Community Section Characteristics (1st segment) • The open drain has a total length of 700 meters upto natural earthen pounding. It is 5 feet wide and 6 feet deep • There are 250 homes and more than 50 shops just at the drain. • The people through their solid waste in slums alongwith the drain or directly in the drain which chocks the drain. • The solid waste slums in area are cause of odour and diseases in area.

Natural earthen pounding of wastewater(2nd Segment) All the generated wastewater from community section selected is collected in this pound Sewerage water of approximately 20,000 people is collected in this pound. This pound will be managed in the form of shallow artificial wetland. Aquatic plants will be added in this pound which is a natural treatment and oxidation method.

Farmer’s section Characteristics(3rd Segment) • The area of 150 acre is selected . • A committee of four farmers is already working in area which are owners • The18 farmers are identified as wastewater users in selected site which are all leasers. • The land is uneven, Plots are unleveled and of small sizes and irregular shapes.

Baseline Activities • The survey was conducted for selection of homes to apply EM in washrooms • The meetings are conducted with town committee to get their help for solid waste and wastewater management in project area. • A cleaning programme was started with the help of town committee to remove the solid waste slums from area. • The individual meetings and community meetings were conducted with members of farmers committee already working in area. • A social welfare committee of volunteer social workers of area is formed which consists of five members. • The Ground Water and wastewater samples were collected from area selected. • The Soil and plant samples were collected from selected area

Meetings with Town Committee Officer The Following were the objectives • Remove the solid waste slums from project area. • Placement of solid waste collection bins in area. • Proper collection of solid waste from bins to keep area clean. • The cleaning of open drain and removal of solid waste from it.

  17. IUCN-PWP, NFRDF and Social welfare Committee joint meeting. A joint meeting of IUCN-PWP and NFRDF was conducted with this committee regarding planning to tackle Issue of solid waste collection. Following are outcomes of meeting • Social mobilization for Solid Waste Management at household Level. • Organic fertilizer of household decomposable items. • Lectures in Schools For Solid waste Management Awareness.

EM Application • EM is applied in three steps according to segments divided for better wastewater treatment. • EM Application at grass-root level of wastewater generation • EM Application at Open Drain and Manholes of sewerage line passing parallel to drain • EM Application at wastewater collection pound • EM Application at Farmer’s Channels.

  24. EM and Drums distribution to farmers The drums and EM is provided to 8 agreed farmers. The farmers were hesitant to use the product The farmers were said to use it at one plot while irrigating it with wastewater. It will improves soil quality and enhance the production then you can use it for complete farms with irrigation.

  27. Solid Waste Management Awareness Program • Door to Door Campaign and polythene bags distribution. • Lectures in Schools at solid waste Management at household level. • Solid waste Management Awareness Camp.

  28. Door to Door Campaign and Bags Distribution Polythene bags are distributed in 200 homes at and opposite side of drain. The females in homes are made aware by female members of SWM team NFRDF about segregated collection of recyclable and decomposable items in household garbage. The recyclable item can be sold and decomposable items can be converted into organic fertilizer by EM inoculum and can be used for home gardening
