  3. Provided Services • Counselors work with families • identify possible genetic diseases • Genetic diseases • Huntington’s disease • Breast Cancer • Very few risks • Tests can be misread (rare) Huntington’s Disease

Costs • Tests range from hundreds to thousands of dollars • BRCA (Breast Cancer) Ranges $190-$1290 • HNPCC(Hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer) Ranges $250-$3000 • FAP(Familial adenomatous polyposis) Ranges $235-$1290 • High Cost • DNA based tests are intensive and require expensive medical equipment • Genetic tests are rare • Typically covered by health insurance

  5. Employees • Counselors • Act as patient advocates • Educate patients on whole concept of genetic counseling • Many are researchers themselves dedicated to finding improvements in the field of genetics

Miscellaneous • Japan • Prenatal diagnosis performed on 5,748 women, of whom 5,538 were screened for chromosomal abnormalities (common) • 1,200 clinically applicable tests available • Pregnant women over 35 are encouraged to get genetic counseling • Tests indicating Huntington’s Disease: • Amniocentesis • Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS)
