In Day 3 of our Math ACT workshop, we focus on the power of visualization in solving mathematical problems. Students will learn key formulas for calculating area and volume, specifically for rectangles, triangles, and circles. The strategy of the day is to draw pictures to simplify complex problems. Through pair work with the Rally Coach Activity, students will collaborate to overcome challenging problems by prompting each other with guided questions. The session concludes with a practice test, allowing students to apply learned strategies and score their performance for improvement.

Mastering the Math ACT Day 3 When In Doubt, Draw It Out!
Math Fact of the Day: Area and Volume Area of a rectangle: A = lw Volume of a rectangle: A = lwh Area of a triangle: A = ½ bh Area of a circle:
Math Strategy of the Day: Draw a Picture • Often, a problem that seems complicated becomes easier when you draw a picture to represent the situation. • The sketch doesn’t have to be perfect; but it should give a reasonable visual representation of the problem. • Make sure the sketch is accompanied with labels.
When in Doubt, Draw it Out • You will each be given four problems that will be easier to solve using a picture. • Draw the picture for each of the problems, then check in with your advisor to see if you have the correct sketch. • Once you have been checked in by your advisor continue solving the problems.
Rally Coach Activity • Students need to get into pairs. One person needs to be partner A and the other person needs to be partner B. • Partner A will work from the blue Rally Coaching sheet and Partner B will work from the green Rally Coaching sheet. • Partner A will begin by working on the “Problem to Work Out” on their sheet. • When Partner A gets stuck, Partner B will use their Coaching Problem to help by asking the questions given on the sheet and prompting Partner A to answer them correctly. • When Partner A completes their problem, the roles are reversed for Partner B to work on the “Problem to Work Out” on their sheet.
Practice Test Time • You will receive the next set of questions from your previous test. These will be questions 22-42. • You will have 21 minutes to answer 21 questions. • Remember to use your strategies on answering all of the questions that you know how to do first, use elimination with your answer choices, and draw pictures out when appropriate. • Good Luck!
Score Your Test • Use the answer key to figure out how many questions you answered correctly and to determine how you could have answered others correctly. • Add up the total number of correct questions on this test and the number of correct questions on the previous test. Remember, we will have a grand total after the third test. • Discuss the different strategies that you used in answering the questions amongst your advisory group.
