  2. Who? • Jones was an artist who painted • She was born in 1905 • She married Haitian artist Louis Vergniaud Pierre-Noel in 1953.

Important Dates • 1906- Lois was encouraged to draw at the age of 3 • May 26, 1915- Lois' father was one of the first African Americans to graduate from Suffolk Law School. • 1919-1923- She goes to the High School of Practical Arts in Boston and gets an annual scholarships so she was able to take classes at the Museum of Fine Arts. She was one of the ONLY two black students. • 1923- Harlem Renaissance is occuring. • 1928 Summer- Jones move to New York City to design textiles. • 1930- She accepted an offer to teach at Howard University • 1953- Jones married a Hatian artist and graphis designer. • 1973- Jones became the first African American artist to be given a solo show at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. • 1980- She was honored by President Jimmy Carter outstanding achievements in the arts at the White House. • June 9, 1998- Death( heart attack)

  5. Where? Jones was born in Boston, Massachusetts. By 1928, while the Harlem Rennaissance was occuring she moved to New York City. Jones then went to Washinton D.C to teach at Howard University. When she married Vergniaud Pierre-Noel(hatian artist), she frequently went to Haiti and explored the arts over there.

  6. Why is she famous today? Jones was a prominent African American artist. She achieved most of her goals during the Harlem Rennaissance. Jones became the first African American to have a solo exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Her art unfolded, and embraced different styles and different cultures.

  7. How did she gain fame? She gained fame by all her paintings and all of what she lived for. She accepted offers and even risked moving from places to places trying to achieve her goals. Everyone loved her paintings because they embraced many cultures and styles.

  8. Facts • Even though she received critism like "How could you have designed that? You're a colored girl.“ she continued to do what she has been doing all along. • Her art spans three continents:  North America, Europe, and Africa. • She was VERY successful. • Jones was the second of two children; born and raised by Thomas Vreeland and Caroline Dorinda Jones.
