  1. Family Life Founded On The Teachings of Jesus Christ Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded on the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. Proclamation, ¶ 7 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy…After the tradition of men…And not after Christ. Colossians 2:8 Christ, in his own person, is the one principle of the unity of the universe…sanctification is to be found only through union with him. LDS Bible Dictionaryp. 746, Pauline Epistles/Epistle to the Colossians

  2. The Teachings of Christ vs. The Philosophies of Men Secular philosophies such as hedonism, moralism, and relativism can displace Christ and lead to a misunderstanding and misapplication of the gospel of Jesus Christ in family life…These philosophies are powerful, yet they can be deceptively subtle. Text, p. 142 Christ-Centered Family vs. Pleasure/Self-Centered Family Rule-Centered Family

  3. The Pleasant’s Problem Turning the gospel into a mere vehicle for their own happiness. (Less obvious?) ways to get into the hedonistic trap: • Seeking Pleasure • Gaining material things (vs. blessing others) • Gaining status (vs. building relationships) • Obeying for the blessing (vs. serving Christ) • Avoiding Pain • Ignoring unpleasantries (vs. finding meaning in them and allowing Christ to heal them)

  4. The Moralls’s Problem Worshiping the law more than the Lawgiver. (Less obvious?) ways to get into the moralistic/relativistic trap: • Believing we know what to do at all times (vs. truly living by faith and trusting the Spirit—i.e. following the “Historical Christ” vs. following the “Living Christ”) • Focusing on knowing/following the steps of repentance (vs. having hope, believing Christ) • Letting rules be our focus/idols and end (vs. a means to Christ)

  5. Parenting Applications • Hedonistic Approach vs. Faith Approach • Parents must make children happy (vs. guide children to Christ and thereby real happiness) • Moralistic Approach vs. Faith Approach • Parents must instill and enforce rules, if children don’t know the way parents fail (vs. lovingly nurture and point to Christ, who never fails and who will point the way through the Spirit)

  6. Trusting this World (Self, rules, what happens here & now) Trusting Christ Required Perfection, 100% Christ’sPart (the lacking 10%) Christ’s Part ( atonement, love and mercy) Our Part (90%) Our Part (submit our will to his) Fallen, Natural Man Jesus Christ as the Foundation "It is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do." 2 Nephi 25: 23
