  3. Set up schools and hospitals for African Americans. It also gave out clothes, food, and fuel Helped families reunite after slaves were freed. Set up “freedmen’s schools” to teach African Americans how to read and write. Freedmen’s Bureau (1865)

  4. Amendments • 13th- Freed all slaves in the United States • 14th – All persons born in the United States are citizens • 15th – Citizens can not be stopped from voting on account of race or color

  6. African Americans faced poverty and racism in the South. The KKK wanted to keep African Americans powerless. They terrorized black people, rode on horseback, dressed in white hoods, beat people, burned homes, and lynched some victims. Ku Klux Klan-pg 544
